Title: "a hunt gone wrong" Post by: Caney Creek Hog Doggers on September 07, 2009, 01:39:51 pm Well I was outta town and my dad decided to go hunting, wish I was with him this might not of happened like it did. My dad and I hunt alot together, he has his dogs and I have mine. I have been hunting a little longer than he has, therefore I have alot more finished dogs and a little better quality. Well he went down to one of are hunting spots with some dogs that most likely wouldn't find a hog. He was just taking the dogs to excersize while he looked around for fresh activity so me and him could go with my pack and hopefully catch a few. The dogs he had where Jasper(rcd), Lolly Pop(cd), Gwetto(greyhound x) and Roxy( blue lacy). The only dog out of those four that would for sure catch was Lolly. He turned Gwetto, Jasper, and Roxy out. He pulled out the spotlight and began to look around, what happened next was something he never would have expected. He heard this weird noise so he killed his truck and listened, he thought he could hear dogs barking but wasnt sure. He didn't have any tracking system on them so he really didn't know how far they were. He started his truck and drove to where he thought they were. When he got their he heard a dog yelp like it was hurt, so he cut loose Lolly. He heard a hog grunting a knew he was in trouble cuz I'm the one that goes in and sticks the hogs and stuff. He grabbed his gun and took off. When he got there he saw something he never thought he would see. Lolly was locked on the ear and the hog was pounding her into the ground. He tried to get a shot but couldn't, the hog began to walk with the Lolly and Jasper was know where to be found. He finally got a shot and took him down, Jasper was laying on the ground with a few cuts on his chest, but he seemed ok. My dad took the dogs and watered them then headed home. He called me and was all excited he caught this hog all my himself. When he got home Jasper was dead and Lolly died the next day, neither dog had any bad cuts, guess the hog just hit them in the side and busted some stuff up. My dad was really upset cuz he was just getting a pack together.

Title: Re: "a hunt gone wrong" Post by: Cull Buck on September 07, 2009, 02:43:49 pm I'm sorry to hear that. One of the first leasons I learned while hog dogging is never turn a dog loose unless you are 100% ready to catch a hog.

What kindle of breed/cross is the brindle dog. How does it hunt? Title: Re: "a hunt gone wrong" Post by: nate on September 08, 2009, 01:09:09 pm That's a tough story. Where any of the dogs wearing vests? I am wondering because with not much visable damage, if they were not vested, would it have made any difference?

They were not vested but did have cut collars, I personally don't think it would have made a difference. I lost a dog that had a vest, the hog just hit him to hard in the side!!!Title: Re: "a hunt gone wrong" Post by: nate on September 09, 2009, 06:23:16 am That's a tough story. I lost a dog that had a vest, the hog just hit him to hard in the side!!!I can understand that. I have raised my own dogs from pups. THey are hard hunters and being new to the sport, I really never thought about vests untill I started hearing stories about dogs getting killed. I have since stopped hunting untill I can get my dogs better protected. Title: Re: "a hunt gone wrong" Post by: Bump on September 09, 2009, 08:46:58 am Sorry to hear about the dogs.
