Title: Garden-corn ???? Post by: Nash on June 08, 2014, 04:57:32 pm Went past a mans house last week and saw him cutting the tops off all of his corn stalks right above the ears. Just wondering if any of you folks ever seen this done? I been around folks growing corn my whole life and that's a first for me. I cut 2 out of 7 of my rows gonna see if the corn grows any bigger on the ones I cut.

Post by: Reuben on June 08, 2014, 08:33:19 pm When I was a kid my second favorite crop we raised was corn...first was Maize on account all work was done with powered equipment...but we cut the tops off of the corn stalks right above the last ear of corn...we did this right after the kernel's started to mature...we used hand made machete's that my father made from and old timey cross cut saw...If I remember correctly it was for the corn to dry quicker...first to market and the price is higher...not only that but maturing quicker and getting it to the barn before a big rain or a hurricane were other good reasons...I never asked but that was my thinking on it...

Post by: Nash on June 09, 2014, 09:11:32 pm After the rain and wind storm we had today about all that's still standing of my corn are the two rows of corn I topped to experiment with. Wishing I had topped it all now. I may have found something i may do from now on if it produces just to keep the wind from blowing it all down.
