I know you're very aware of it now but that's the main thing to look for when chaining, if and where they could hang themselves. My dogs can get on top of their dog house but their chain won't let them past the house. That way they can get up on the house to lay down but can't hang themselves by jumping over the back of it. Again, sorry to hear about your loss.
