 Do yall think all of this protine feed we put out for deer is starting to have an effect on the Hogs???????  I belive it is :o

Protein for the deer has a slight affect but its not enough feed to grow them really big and fat unless its just one hog that stays there to eat and runs everything else off, most of the time when you get a big fat hog some rancher close has been feeding his cows. I've seen these big feed troughs filled to the top with sweet feed or really high protein feed, the rancher keeps them full so they never run out during the time he's feeding the cows. (this process could go on for months at a time) The hogs get in them and have a field day, I have heard ranchers saying that they found some hogs in there troughs that have eaten way to much and couldn't hardly move.

i think that you really cant just take a hog give it high protein feed and get a monster. however i think if you combined high potein feed, good genetics and easy terrain(not the hill country lol) i think you could get one like that. i dont know if anybody on here saw that show on discovery called pig bomb but on the show they talked about how with pigs one in every million or somehthin like that has the genes to be massive. just my .02.

I think the over dose of sweet feed, or protein would make him fat as hell, but he has to have the genetics for the huge size. Fat and huge are similar, but not quite the same. My thoughtless anyway.

Well lets take a human for example.  i know pigs and humans arent similar but.  If an athlete takes protine it helps them gain body mass Not fat. and we all knoe them damn running hogs are very antletic. HAHA

i caught a boar that weighed 425# back in 2001, he had been coming to some feeders a rancher had out for yearling calves, it was full feed, they had watched him for couple of months they called me and we went out on a july day and seen him leavin the feeder headin for Big Creek bottom, we turned out on him and bayed him up in some johnson grass, cut the catch dog loose and got him, he fought for about 30 seconds maby and then just sat on his butt and stopped fightin, we went up to him and finilly got him rolled over and tied, i guess he was so big and fat and OLD he couldnt really fight long with it beein hot out side and full of feed

caught some in the 350-375 lb range in the river bottoms where there aint no feeders of no kind.

The high protein feed wouldn't make the hog that fat. High Protein consumption actually burns fat on animals. My cousins have a ranch up there about 5 miles from Schulenburg and usually theres alot of nut grass and other stuff for them to forage on. That combined with the protein is prolly what did it.

Just wandering why they feed it to the calves if it want fatten a hog up? Isn't it suppose to fatten the calves up?

Im sure the protein helped him but he couldn't have just made his livin off that. To much protein burns fat.

The feed that they are feeding yearling calves is most likely some kind of sweet feed, ground up grain with molasses on it.  This kind of feed is usually only about 8 to 12% protein.  I would not call this a high protein diet.  This kind of diet is usually given to the yearling calves to fatten them a little, but more than anything, grow them before they ship them to the feedlots.  Sweet feed will get a hog fat and they love it because of all the molasses.  As for the high protein deer feed, it is pretty unlikely that one hog could eat enough of it get that big.  As everyone else said it is probably a combination of all the factors of genetics, feed, and environment that allows this hog to get so big.

No doubt, There have been some big hogs pulled out on Big Creek. I've caught several that were pushing 300lbs there, but still looking to break the 400lb mark. Its a small world.

It is a small world. Owner of the business next to my office told me yesterday that he killed a 700 lb hog that came out of Big Creek....or he claimed to be 700 lb.  rolleyes I dont think feral hogs can get anywhere near that size.

We hunt a place in Marion County that has been feeding protein for several years. We never catch a skinny pig there. And I'm not saying they are all the rolly polly fat. Almost all the boar hogs have big 300th. Never caught one over 400# though. Caught several over 300#

When we raised European boars I had a silverback boar that I sold at 28 months old....we weighed him on digital scale and he went 462 pounds.....Of course this was with selective breeding and awesome genetics, but he was double the size of his littermates.....Just a freak when it came to growth.

In the beginning we experimented with protein percentages from 10% to 24%....We found thru trial and error that vitamin content played a bigger role than protein did for putting on weight and for tusk growth.  The feed that we began using was 12-14% protein and was high in vitamins/minerals....
