Title: Hog Mounts
Post by: Boss Hoggin Outlaw on September 10, 2014, 09:22:17 am
Where is the best place to get a hog mounted in y'all's opinion? I've seen some that look like number 2 and only a few that actually look decent. And how much am I looking at paying for a good mount?

I have some pictures of a few hog shoulder mounts I did on page 2 of this same category entitled "hog mounts".  I'm in Palestine and I charge $500 + tax for a standard boar shoulder mount.

I always wanted to do a rug mount on a hog, like a bear. Have his four hooves attached , tail, & I guess you would have to trim the bottom of the form for the head. Ive been wanting to do that on a good russian hog that was wooly, but everytime I catch a good one, some of my friends want to mount the hog.
Byrd Taxidermy, have you ever done that & what would that run???

Cajun,  that sounds very interesting...never seen or heard of anybody doing one like that.  Don't know exactly what I would charge for something like that but I could see it getting pricey.  Skinning out the entire boar for a rug mount,  removing all of the shield on both sides,  having to alter a manikin head to accomodate a rug and preparing the hide would be a lot of work.  I would definitely be interested in doing one though...you just might be on to something!

I was gonna do that too. I took a 375# hog to a guy in mo n he charged me $700 n then 6mth later claimed his freezer thawed put n my hide, along with many other peoples hides. I nvr got my money or the rug. Only problem i saw with a rug is, stepping on a tusk in the middle of the night.

Is $700 a reasonable price, considering like u said, fleshing the entire hide, tanning and setting the head properly to sit on the floor

Here's a pic I found that UNDERDOG posted several years ago... I think he said it was from a friend in Holland.

I been wanting to do a hog rug for awhile. I have seen one and it was a spotted hog. A guy in Oklahoma owned it and posted it on Larry Parker's board. It still had the bottom tusks though.

I am thinking you could cut the form from the bottom of his jaw to right behind the ears & that way you could get the tusks in. I would already have the hide skinned out to the first joint in the hooves & have it caped out. I am sure you would have to flesh the shield out but taxidermist have to do that on any mount & probably send the hide off to a tannery. Be a lot of work but would sure look cool.
I know bear rugs are roughly $200.00 a foot or a little more.
