Title: breaking old dog off skunk
Post by: ktchemwcurs on September 22, 2009, 05:56:16 pm
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to break a 4 year old bad butt strike cur dog off of a skunk. He never has trashed on anything but the last few hunts he hates a skunk, but he will go find a hog afterwards.....he just stinks really bad!!!!!!

I don' know, our strike dogs will do the same thing on occasion. Sometimes its good entertainment, we went hunting one night with countryman_563 and Hoghunter04 and our dogs bayed about 50 yards from us down in a ditch. They took off running towards the dogs and when they got there, they turned tail and booked em back towards us at mock 10. We thought maybe a big hog got after them. Come to find out our old Red dog was try to bring a skunk to them. LOL :D It was hillarious!

think they are bored we are haveing the same thing happen.  good luck getting them broke if your real addaminate about doing it you could shoot a skunk then put it on a short chain to their collar when it cools off for a day or so but I sure aint going to do it but that would or should make them tired of skunks and want nothing to do with them

Tried that with a chicken and the dog was thrilled that his new found kill was attached to him and he played with it, rolled on it and tried to eat some of it for 3 days. It was stinking so bad and gross that we cut it off. Just got rid of the chickens but good luck with skunk.

hahahahahhaha, thats awesome!! I could see my dogs doing that. A dead skunk,55ga metal barrel and a hill might work.

Thanks for all the suggestions, but I have tried to get close enough to the skunk to put a string on it to tie to his neck and around 2 to 3 feet your eyes go to watering and I start poqking, so now I know why he rolls around on the ground trying to get it off of him. I will say that some people  say that it affects thier nose but he has struck and caught hogs 10 min. after he has killed a skunk and he won't bark at the skunk either. He is a good looking dog! If you know anyone with skunk problems, here is your dog!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

yeah doing what i said with chickens usually does not work but the dog or the one my uncle did it to did not want to eat the skunk just kill it then would bring it to the porch and then leave it.  It worked for him.  He said it allready stunk so bad around there he figgured a couple of days with it tied to the dog would not be too bad.

my dog has taken butt whoppins for trashing on skunks. HE thinks he is smarter than everyone cause now he just kills them without making a single peep. He Rolls up on us like he has been working hard on a track or something smelling like a Skunk.

I think some dogs think that skunk smell is cocaine, they just cant get enough of it, at least they normally kill them without barking....shock collars are the only thing that works for me but you then have to see it happen...good luck

That's why i'm real hard on my young dogs that I raise from pups... it's hard to break bad habits off older dogs that come in.

SilvertonBoarDogs has a JAM-UP finished strike dog (Jessie), and everytime I've hunted over him he found a skunk.
When you smelled the skunk, it was time to tighten up the boot laces and make sure you had all your gear secured, cause he was gonna be on a hog within 5 minutes.
I'll never understand how he can sniff out a hog with a mouthfull of skunk spray.
I always say he is "cleansing his pallate". ;D

I think Mike's Tweety dogs skunk problem can be traced back to her owner.  You see, Mike's a little trashy himself. Skunks and snakes are his problem...but he's struck enough hogs that we keep him around ;)

No guns were used in the harming of this skunk ;D

Mandi's dog Lizzie sure likes a skunk too. She might go 6 months without nailing one, but when she does get one, she makes it count.

My partners lead dog, the best dog we own between us, is a skunk killing fool. He will strike a hog minutes after killing a skunk so we just consider it a cost of doing business.

My little red dog struck his first skunk on the Babes vs. Bars hunt. My tool box, and his collar still stink. If he ends up being a consistent strike dog and still kills skunks, I'll likely just put up with it. If he turns out a help dog and still kills skunks, he will be a goner.

My Uncle used to have this spray he would put in their nose think it was skunk musk, or something like that. It would irritate them to the point that they hated that smell and would not want to track it. I would always use a heavy hand and mesquite tree worked 99%.

But you will always have one that would screw up the curve or percentages for that one I would drive and find a skunk for him to kill on the county road then we would go hunt. LOL

this makes me feel better we just sold a really nice young strike dog and the man brought her back because she killed a skunk. she is a pig finding fool and never killed a skunk while we had her but the first time out with the new owner she did and he wasnt happy.

I read on TPWD that skunks are the number two rabies carrier in texas just behind bats. We hunt a place in goliad that is over run with skunks, its not rare to see 20 in a night so we always end up with someone trashing and stinkin the lot of us for a hour and a half drive home. I hunt out of a suv so we cant do anything but role the windows down, it seems to me every property has a different trash issues, if its not skunks its javalina, if its not javalina its a armadillo, if its not a armadillo its a coon ,hunting south texas is a dog trainers nightmare you have to stay on them every hunt but i wouldnt change one hunt with my dogs. Some of us just have to learn the hard way.

Tweety's sister Ruby has the same addiction.

Ron,

Do you have a picture of Ruby?  Also, do you know anything about her pedigree?  Tweety has been a dead end for me with regards to lineage.

I don't have one that I know of, but I can try and get one.  She is alot smaller than Tweety and has a little bit of blue and red in her coat.

As far as lineage, what you got from Krystal would be all I know.  The genleman that Mike H. got them from bred them as cow dogs.  But he gave them to Mike because they would not work on cows, but would "bay the hair off a hog".

Ruby wont range as far as Tweety by herself......but they will run stride for stride together.  I think Ruby is a little grittier.

Thanks Ron,

I'll see if Hilscher can come up with the lineage, or at least a contact # for the man that bred them.

Hilscher got dogs from Robert Poppy, but Poppy did not breed those dogs, they were young when he got them and only gave them "a" chance to bay, before sending Tweety to Hilscher. two days later Hilscher dumped Tweety out of trailer on the hunt as scared pupppy that did not know  him or any of us, much less what a hog was, and she would not come to anybody. We hunted Watterson that night and got on a real good boar in the creek and Tweety was in on the boar when we turned the catch dog loose, got two smaller hogs the same night. Got back to the trucks and took atleast 20 minutes to even catch her to load her. She has been hunting ever since.

I have tried to get Poppy to give me more info on them pups. Ruby same thing came along about a month later.

Ruby is the Skunk QUEEN! I counted five bayed & sprayed skunk in one hunt on her, and I think she likes electricity because she will keep right on doing it.

Hey we fixed him buddy, we just painted a stripe down all the hogs in Mat. Co. so he couldn't tell the difference. He didn't have any problem this past weekend. The ony problem I had is finding him. He is going from a medium range dog to a AT&T you have to call somebody to find him. I have got to get me a Garmin! You and Scooter need to let me have yours since you got that good Bloodline from me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!LMAO
