Nichols file was what I used from what I've read that's about the only one you can use

I've made a few out of rasps and was wondering if you anneal them to work them and then reharden them or if you just do it all with rasp hard?

I have read on the knife forums that you are supposed to anneal them first. Heat them until they are non magnetic. Then cut, and grind them the way you want before you heat treat & temper them. Also read that Bellota horse rasps are supposed to be 1095 steel.

I anneal them before I do them but I was wondering if he did. I have heard of guys that never anneal them but its durn near impossible to drill the holes for the pins if you don't. That critical temp is about 1475 degrees for 1095.

Very nice for your first one ! I use to make a lot of knives out of hoof rasp and if done right they make a very good blade. Nice work !!

I hear them up then grind all the file teeth down shape it then sand it down about 3/4 of the way to being finished then retemper it and then I'll finish it just make sure and not get it hot

I'm doing another should have it done by tomorrow evening if something don't change my plans i tempered this one a little differently really liking how it looks

Kerrydw, What are you using for grinding, cutting, & polishing the blades? Pretty good work so far.

I've got a cheap northern industrial bench belt sander 27 inch belts and a ridged band saw I converted to a belt sander I cut everything out with a 4 inch hand grinder with the cut blades

On the sanding it's by hand 250 grit 400grit 600grit 1000grit lots of sanding use soapy water not dry
