Got a dog that hunts his heart out but is straight catch. No bulldog in him. He would be an awesome strike dog if he would ever back up. I'm assuming a suicidal dog will always be so. Words of wisdom appreciated. Thanks!

I ain't seen many that rough that catch that back up has the dog been on big ones if you say yes than that's more than likely his M O

I agree with JP...a catchy dog usually will stay that way...even if he gets beat down a few times he will more than likely get back to his catchy self after a while...

Hunt him by himself & hope he has some brains when he gets on a big hog.  He probably will not back up for sows & smaller hogs but hopefully when he does get on a big one, he will bay.

The first sure nuff ripper will test his metal.

If he takes a bad beating that puts him on his side for a few weeks.

You will know what ya got when he gets back up. 8)

Only one way- put a muzzle on him.  He will realize real quick that he cat catch and he will back up and bay or leave the hog- cause he sure wont be able to catch.

Sounds like he needs to come to me lol.

Or just get another one like him and catch hogs

   winner winner chicken dinner   lol  judge got it right . if you can't hunt him that way , trade him off to someone else that runs a rough pack .  if he doesn't have dogs in the pack to help him he will surely die . my original dogs were all rough except for a couple of gyps but they would eventually back up and bay after the pack got cut down . that's how I knew what kind of hog I was running into . grunting and squeeling every thing ok , baying dogs was one of them uh oh moments   lol  .

 If he is too rough for you , get rid of him. I have yet to see a dog back off that was rough. Life is too busy time waste time sewing up dogs.

Look at it from a pack stand point, either you want a rough pack or a loose pack. If he don't really fit your style then appreciate him for what he is and either cull him or send him to someone who likes a rough dog. All that matters is what you like.

I agree. I like a rough joker also. But be aware if he is a bay breaker.

YBM most folks don't understand the difference in a bay buster or just a rough ole cur dog. Bottom dogger has the dog mentioned been on something that's going to test to see just how much salt he has to him?

I've always believed in letting dogs teach you how they hunt, rather than trying to teach them howto to hunt. The latterI is aa bit ofand a fool's errand. If you don't like his style or it doesn't suit you, just get rid of him. You have what you want, he's not it, case closed... alternatively you could just roll with it and try to adapt yourself. To a certain point I try to do the latter, not be too set in my ways. But I have a fair set of deal breaking qualities. What you describe here, for me, is not a deal breaker, in fact pretty much the opposite.

Try hunting him alone...sometimes these type of dogs will do a good job when hunted alone...won't break the bay and put enough bite to keep them from running when the hog wants to break...

Ive had two that were suicidal, even after getting wooped to where they almost didn't make it.  The only thing that backed them up was age and experience (im talking about 7-8 years).  But then if another dog showed up they were right back to catch dogs.

A "smart" cur dog that knows how and when to be rough, as well as, knows when to put slobber on ones face is priceless. I personally have no use for a suicidal dog. To each there own though.

i agree with everyone. either you want a rough pack or a loose baying pack. If the rest of your pack is loose he will more than likely be a bay buster!

I run loose and rough and run them together works good for me

Send him to Florida. Those are the ones I like.

I would hunt the dog by itself.  You might find out that you have a "one dog show".
