Title: How far is short range....
Post by: Etxcntryboy on September 24, 2009, 10:04:20 pm
Plenty people talk about their dog being short to medium range.  I like to think a short range dog is about 300yrds.  And I guess it goes from there.  I was just wondering what ya'll thought.

And somethin' else.  I went huntin' last week with some new guy's.  They only wanted to turn the dogs out on fresh sign.  Me personally, I like my dogs to go find the sign, and eventually the hog.  Any thoughts?

I was just curious, cuz you see so many people advertising dogs that are short, medium, or long, but nobody ever says, oh 'bout 500 yrds.  just wonderin'

I have tried alot of dogs for potential purchase over the last two years and what I have found is if a guy tells you he has a short range dog that usualy means it wont hunt! Myself if I have to go find fresh hog sign to put a dog on I will just start hunting with pitbulls

All of my dogs are short range. They will hunt within 600 yards of me but they lack no bottom. I have been on boars that run over 15 miles with my short range dogs

Short - under 600 yards
medium - under a mile
long - over a mile
bottom - wont stop until the hog is bayed

They HUNT over a mile from you looking for a hog track? That is Super long range..

Short range- less than 200 yds
Med. Range- 200-600 yrds
Long ran- 600+ yds

But with my range that is when you let them out of the box they stay that distnace making loops and LOOKING for a hog track to take.

i've never had the luxury of only turning my dogs out on fresh sign, but i would if i had enough open land to hunt.  i'd call it hog catchin' instead of hog huntin'. you can't always see the sign in east texas, because it's in the thicket.

If they were hunting young dogs they may have wanted to save them, sometimes with young dogs you can mess up thier dirve by leaving them on the ground to long where you know there is nothing there. Lots of times I load the dogs on large ranches just cause in 3+ years of hunting the same place I know where the hogs are going to be and where they arent. No point in waisting time in an area you have never started hogs before. Also depending on how dry it is I will hunt around water and not road them to much between water holes if it is dry. I also hunt alot of feeders which at the right time of year there is no point putting the dogs on the ground until you are close to one, depending on the time you are hunting and the time the feeders are going off.

Range clearly on this board is open for debate, that will never be agreed upon by all. Everyone has thier own ideas, ways and thoughts. Go hunt get the time in the field and make up our own thoughts and ideas then hunt to please you and get the dogs that please you. If someone doesnt like the distance your dogs hunt out then dont invite them back or dont hunt with them. Not everyone agrees on everything, there are several people I hunt with on a reg basis that I dont agree with on some things, doesnt mean any of us are wrong , we have just learned to come to terms on somethings so we can hunt together.

I do enjoy reading a good debate. Sometimes I'm dead set on how things are and then I read everyone elses oppinions and their points of view and then I see things in a new light. Personally, I think that 300 to 500 is short, 500 to 700 is medium and 700 and up is long range. Anything less than 200 yards and I will just shoot the dang hog, won't need no dog. Sometimes we drop the dogs without any signs and sometimes we look for fresh sign first, depending on whether or not we've had a rain or not and whether its day or night.

Glad you hunt country where you can see hogs at 200 yrds, we cant here 200 yrds here is a long way, if you see one and the IF is mighty big its at a full run and most times less than 100 yrds for about 2 sec. The hogs here bring a whole new meaning to the name rushin boar.

Range and what you like again is personal and depends on where you hunt. Why dump a long range dog out in 600 acres, or in my case why dump a long range dog out in 11000 acres when I know where the hogs are going to be (as a rule). You can spend all night following a long range dog with nothing at the end, why not use shorter ranged dogs and cover more hot spots and catch more hogs.
