Title: squirrel dogs
Post by: Georgia-Hawgs on October 10, 2015, 12:04:42 pm
Anybody run squirrel dogs? I had a fella give me a 4 year old mountain cur the other day. Hes a squirrel treeing machine. I've never done much squirrel hunting behind a dog but im pretty excited to get the kids out there and give it a shot.

I've only done it a couple of times but it was a blast! I had my son with me, he was about 6 or 7 at the time. He thought it was the greatest thing in the world.  ;D
One of these days I'm going to have a squirrel dog.

I've got a few. I'm not into it as heavy in the competition hunting as I was a few years ago but still pleasure hunt when deer hunting ends. Everything takes a back seat when it's deer season especially all the dog hunting sports. This is a pic of my baby girl. She's nice squirrel dog. Got older and younger but she's the star.

She's pretty intense tree dog. It's her breeding. Some of her siblings are same way or even more intense. She makes me wish I enjoyed the comp hunts but I just don't. Thanks for the comments.

Nice pics/ dogs!
-
WHF, that red gyp is sure appears to have some saw dust in her blood.
-
What does a good finished squirrel dog run these days? Are they hard to find? I've been considering movin back into the tree dog direction. I grew up coon huntin. I have no desire to stay up all night anymore.
-
Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.
-
Keep puttin tree rats on the wood!

he does look like a busher bred dog...bushers tend to like coon better than squirrel and some make excellent hog dogs...quite a few are of the larger type mt cur...about how much does he weigh?

Them busher dogs are supposedly more of the old strain of mt cur. They don't have any streak blood in them. Streak was more feist looking and hotter nosed that the old strains. That why they usually all darker in color and bigger like Reuben said. Also the colder nose better working on old cold coon feeder tracks. I like killin and eating squirrel so it don't matter the strain to me. As far as price of a good squirrel dog they are about like the hog dogs I reckon. As expensive or cheap as you want. Saw high power comp dogs go from 10-15 grand. I payed 600 for my old gyp but have turned down 3000. She just needed to be hunted to get right. She's not comp type dog but I can fill a bunch of black pots with squirrel gravy with her. My young red gyp in pic is comp speed dog she can make your tongue hang out if you in squirrel going tree to tree as fast as you unsnap her.

The dog might even weigh 50 pounds. Hes got a thick black coat and is trimmed with brindle on his legs , white chested, white toes on all 4 feet. Real high strung. The guy said he has treed a few coons with him when he was younger.

That little brindle gyp i posted. We turned down 2500 and the choice to breed to any stud dog in america and we got to keep half of the pups. Turned down all of that and she got shot in the back leg in january. Still can tree but can't really belly up on one anymore. She is jukebox x streak bred. We own her mom and every single one out of the litter sold for 4 digits. We recently bred her mom to an own o double t's burlap. Got high hopes for these pups. But as far as prices it may be 100 it may be 10,000.
