I know I saw someone say something about it in here but I cannot find it. Anyway it was said that if you had a real timid/skittish dog, per in their water a little bit for a few weeks and it was supposed to be some magical fix... Just wondering if there's any truth to it(old wise tale maybe) and if it was actually advice.  Or was it a joke

I have a dog whose gone back and forth being skittish and doing ok so I'm honestly thinking about giving it a shot... Cause right now she still tucks tail and I'm not a fan of it

the peeing in the water helps for a skittish dog, but if its that skittish it wont solve your problem. you could not feed it for a few days and then hand feed it for a couple months, you could give it a good petting every day, I would definitely keep it in a kennel so you dont have problems catching it up. When you have a loose dog thats skittish, the more you get frustrated trying to catch it up, the more the dog distrusts your intentions, putting it on a chain works too. I think hand feeding meat and taking it on long leash walks would work best

I have a bluetick bitch that was near impossible to catch once she got free. She was fixn to catch a lil lead poison, but i put her on a chain for 2wks, she was a lot easier to get to come to me on the chain. She was even off the chain for some unk time, i went to feed and she was still within her confinds of the chain ao. I didnt know she was off till i went to put feed in her bowl. I just snapped her back on. Even letting her off the chain to run free for most of the day, she was a easier to get ahold of, but i had to get down to her level and mooch her in. Im hoping another couple months on the chain and i can trust her to go hunting. Idk, only time will tell.

But on the topic on tbh, i have a male similar to the guys inquiry. I found out bout his aggression when i went feed when it was cold enuf my blue denium wrangler wouldnt cut the cold and had my carhart on. He backed to the end of his chain and went bat chit crazy, as i advanced in an aggressive manner, it was on like donkey kong. I let him chew the hell out of my arm and continued to encourage him while he was attacking me. I still get him to do it sometimes. He has even got to where he hates the weed trimmer and will stop the trimmer head while running full power trimming the weeds near him. The only reason he is still around is, i know 100% he will not let anyone he doesnt know, on the back porch. He pulled his stake out of the ground one morning and sunk his canines in my mother in laws arse, so that made me realize he was a keeper

She's half catahoula half black mouth cur. She's chained out like the rest of my dogs. She will come to me and stuff she trusts me enough I suppose but when I call her she comes and crouches at my feet and tucks her tail. Hell I guess she really ain't all that skittish now that I think about it, just a little timid and real real submissive. She's about 14 months old. Got her from my uncle, he got a real heavy hand with her and did that dog in for him atleast. Told me to come get it or he was gonna shoot it. She's come around a lot. Just wish she had some confidence in herself rather than roll over almost scared at my feet. Working wise she done good. Bayed about 30 head of cattle for me when I first got her and she's seen one hog so far and bayed like crazy. I do plan on giving her a hell of a shot because she comes from real good bloodlines from what my uncle says. I know well enough that he don't keep junk

How does that long term fix anything?

If you water them using a bucket, put an old tire on the ground and put the bucket inside of it, and it usually keeps em from being able to piss in their water. They just hit the tire and and they're usually good with that.

I don't know if it's any account or what but when I'm feeding my dogs if the notion strikes me and I got to piss I'll pee in their water, on them, or right at the entrance of their dog house and most of the time my dogs want come to anyone else but me, It's my theory that they learn to recognize your scents as well as your pheromones in your scent, it could just be all coincidence or there could be something to it idk, I also read in an article once that in a pack the dominant male will piss on their others dogs in one of the ways he shows his dominance , as far as the dog laying at your feet and getting timid, watch other dogs behavior when there is a dominant one around they do the same, I have a gyp that if she's around people she has an uncontrollable shake, but will leave and go do her job once I get her away from crowd, she's very timid acting and other than the hard hand a few times while she was a younger dog she hasn't been abused bc I raised her from a pup and neither parents were like that either.

oh yes sir. Like I said this ole gyp comes from an old family of stock dogs so she will be 2.5-3 before I give up on her. Though I don't think it'll take that long cause her sister that my uncle still has is making a hand of a dog for being so young.. I'm gonna really get her going here soon and I'm hoping she will make the best dog I own with some time and experience. She just gives me the feeling that she can be so we will see

if a dog is skittish enough that it wont come to you, if you dont feed it for a few days and then feed it by hand it makes the dog like you and trust you and want to come to you, its some of the most impressionable positive reinforcement you can give a dog. You have to feed it out of your hand though so it associates the reinforcement with your hand and your smell. It works with aggressive dogs too

Shell prob just grow out of that if you dont beat her. Id give her daily rub downs, but make sure you dont pet her or reward her when she is cowering, she will just keep doing it. people say petting her under the chin helps. Ive had dogs like that and they grow out of it, I just make sure they are sitting upright before i pet them. taking her on walks or runs helps build confidence and use any excuse you can to praise her. give her lots of positive reinforcement when shes acting proper

Hang his water bucket by a wire. Make it high enough he cannot pee in it and low enough he can drink out of it.

haha "he" you got it made man all four of my males do it and it's enough to get me Purdy mad some days especially in the summer time

 I had a pit that peed in his water any time another male dog entered the yard. I almost had the problem solved until I had to adopt my moms dog. Drove me crazy!!!!

He was more amstaff than pit. I first though 50/ 50, but as he grew it seemed more 3/4 amstaff, 1/4 pit
