Title: Panhandle Pups, Old 1903 Photo
Post by: Briar on January 16, 2016, 12:44:54 am
Here is a neat picture I saw posted from Higgins Texas up in the Panhandle. The photo is from 1903.
The guys in the background are standing in front of the Saloon.
Any guesses what kind of dogs he has got there ?

great old pics. I've read an article once that talked about a Plott brother being up in the panhandle area having plotts curs.  Does the picture have any info on it

Not so much as the dogs have been so crossed up as it is they haven't been bred or culled like they were back then, dogs were just as essential to life back then as a settlers rifle was.....

I absolutely love looking at these old photos and am trying to start a collection of them.

I found this picture a few years ago browsing around...
I crossed referenced it with a book containing our family tree...
It was crazy to me!

That is a cool old picture Chris ! I wish I had some pics of Dads dogs when he was a kid. He wasn't what I'd call a dogman when I was growing up, but he had a way with dogs and horses. He grew up in South Florida around Zolfo Springs and Okeechobee in the late 30's and 40's. Hunting was life or death, and he did about all his hunting behind dogs with a .22 or a shotgun. I never heard much about the dogs he ran, he passed away about the time I got interested in them. I know he took a horse and a dog and would run for hours behind the dog and shooting everything they jumped.

Mike, the info on the photo says the guy with dogs is "Dr. Rand". They look a lot like a Plott though don't they ?

Semmes, that is an awesome find man, very very cool !

Anyone that wants to find the picture, do a search for Traces of Texas on Facebook. The guy posts a ton of real cool old pictures from all over the state. Worth following.
