Title: Getting bulldog on ear
Post by: Johnny_Utah on February 24, 2016, 10:04:20 pm
I've got a year old bulldog, never seen a hog until a week ago. He caught he first time on ear, then second time on jaw. But today I worked him again and he caught snout and back of neck between ears. What's a good technique to get him to catch ear every time.

Some bulldogs are 100% straight on the ear from the start. Some do learn to go to the ear & others prefer the jaw or nose. Even seen some that always went for the legs. Try to get him on the ear by somebody holding the hog by the back legs & you leading the bulldog to the hog. Try that a couple of times & he might learn to go to the ear but there are no guarantees.

What size pig are you working with? Some times if you are using to small a pig it seems to me they will just grab it and control it. If you use a bigger hog harder for them to control it seems they figure out the safest and easiest place to be is on the ear. Just my opinion, but some dogs just ain't got it and are never gonna be straight ear dogs. That's why a jam up bulldog is hard to find.

Break him off, put him on the ear and let the hog go with him holding on. Do this several times and he may figure it out. But like Cajun said, some just prefer to catch the jaw or snout.

I don't mind catching he jaw but when he catches snout his mouth winds up in the hogs mouth

Yep,, and if he does it long enough he will break his K-9's ,, repetition will show him that it is easier on the ear,, but guide him on it with the hog controlled  time and time again,, He should put it together .. Good luck

Bulldogs LOVE praise.  Have someone hold the hogs back legs.  Put him on the ear and praise the heck out of him.  Pet him all over and "baby-talk" him, etc.  When he goes anywhere else on the hog, immediately break him off and tell him "NO".  Put him back on the ear and praise him.
