EAST TEXAS HOG DOGGERS FORUM

I had been out the few previous times going back all the way to last year with nothing, not even a look at one. Well I call up Blastin and CAhogman and drive up. Last month we all went out and hiked about 12 miles but didn’t get on anything.  We bring out Blastin’s dogs Daizy (GSP), Trix (Lacy), Cinch (Kemmer, Plott, APBT), and his RCD Honkey (fogot what mix he is). CAhogman brings his two Cats Buck and Hank.

So we go out to one of Blastin’s ranches and cast the dogs out, all I see is Daizy’s and Buck’s dust, those two dogs flat out fly and cover some serious ground.  We are walking through the orchard part and couldn’t have been more than 30 mins and I hear Blastin tell CA “there on something bud”, CA says “yep” and no more than a minute later we hear a loud squeal so we start running to them. It’s a nice little sow 80-100lb. The dogs have her locked down and sure enough Daizy is on the sow’s backside chewing an even bigger hole in her arse lol. I coolly and collectively bust out my hog slaying skills lol and black hog down. Finally!!! Not much but I will take it.

kila, you dont by chance have an american bulldog do ya? a friend in texas has 2 friends around bakersfield huntin that got bulldogs from him.

I got a mixed up pack of mutts. 1 walker, 1 plott, 1 Catahoula, 1 Airedale/border collie, 2 patterdales, 1 am staff,1 Home Depot free to good home mutt. That looks part bull terrier part who knows what. Negative on the American bulldog.

I try to get out 3-4 times a month. At a minimum 2 a month. Late winter and dead of summer I get to a little more.

Both hounds are open others are silent on track.

I didn't realize there were that many dog men on here from California. I'm on the LA/Kern counties line, would like to tag along one of these days.

Kilowatt, how's that Airedale cross hunt?

lief, have you tried any of the irish terrier crossed stuff from down here? i had 2 half airedale half catahoulas  some years back and  have always wondered what a straight cross of irish terrier and catahoula would be. if i had all the places to hunt my partner has had i would have tried a blend of irish, cat and ab just for chits and giggles.

I have not, I was offered a pup from some of the terrier crosses but it was before I got into hog dogs, I wish I would have took it, there were a lot of good pups in that litter, they were mostly Catahoula and plott, they don't give out the heavy irish terrier stuff much

was that a pup from shotgun when bred to bumgardners female? if so that made good dogs. with the papered irish terriers they bought a few years ago alot of the dogs here today have more irish terrier in the line/family than it ever did. the dogs of today even have a couple shots of australian shepherd in their background.

Hunts good caught several on his own. Good handle. All catch on a small or week hog, on a rough one he'll either bay or get a mouth full of nuts. He's pretty short range these day's, probably due to his age. I think he'll be 9 or 10 this year. Tried to retire him but he'll get after the wife's chickens. Plus he still goes nuts if you leave him at home

yeah chai is a good one.  now i just wish i could remember how exactly hes bred lol. tryin to think that corey lovelands airedale cross is back there  then bred with franks  stuff. guess i gotta make a phone call tommorrow to find out. wish i was smart enough to post pictures since i changed computers again. i know some time back i actually posted some pictures to this site.

Been awhile since I've been on here but definitely nice to see some more California guys on here that run hogs y'all are a lil south of me I'm up in the Sonoma area.

welcome big boar. i think im about the only one that comes here thats from around salinas area.  i know in my area you dont see anywhere near the number of dog boxes in pickups that you did 20 to 40 years ago. these other guys on here hunt, im just more of a token used to hunt hard, fat, old guy now ,lol. what you runnin for dogs? i know around sonoma area years ago there didnt appear to be euro blood in those hogs up there. has that changed?

lol lief, i actually have you in pictures from the first time you came down here and hunted i think. we caught a small sow and tigger and titan were young dogs. too bad you werent in the picture yet when i still was actively takin my bulldogs to the woods every week. back then the tree man had so many good places it wasnt funny. we hunted after work a couple times a week for many years and was rare to have a dry run.  ahh the good ol days. it was nothing like these texans  have but for us we slammed em  around here.

I think that was the first pig I ever killed with dogs. I would have been in hog heaven back in the good old days, I was a huntin fool back then. If you can find those pics if like to get a copy

Ya Gary Fuller there is quite a bit of Euro blood around here now i've had some of my ranches for 6 plus years and use to get nothing but boring ole black pigs nothing else no high lights no color at all now the last few years nothing but colored pigs of every color combination you can think of, so definatley some new blood lines getting in there and stirring things up which i myself think is awsome lil variety now and some cool looking bigger boars out there now. As for what im running im kinda a running catch kinda guy like em to shut em down quick my dogs will catch pretty much everything and anything its gotta be a pretty big and mean one for them to be barking, but they have the brains in em if they are getting beat up they will back off till i get there. All my dogs have a quarter to half ridgeback in them then mixed with some cattle dog and lil bit of cur or some hound and a dash of pit  in there as well they kinda medium range dogs that will take a track pretty decent.

thanks big. i like hearin about how hog populations are in different areas. i have 2 copies of a book all about hogs in this country. interesting read but now outdated in alot of cases.  its been years since i hunted behind dogs that had any discenable amount of ridgeback in em. years back guys who used a turn in bulldog used half apbt half ridgeback or 3/4 apbt 1/4 ridgeback. they wanted the bulldogs power and ability to catch and not let go and add some more size and less desire to dog fight from the ridgebacks. hunted behind a couple plott ridgebacks that if you could keep em off deer would find hogs if any were in the county,lol. i bred one of my abs to a female of a guys up around liveremore some years back and he liked the results. the female was catahoula and border collie.one of my first 2 hog dogs was a big male aussie that would flat make a big boar sit .

Bigboarinca some interesting crossed up dogs you have, do you have any pics of them you could post?

My Brindle dog on the back of the blue bike is the half sister to the dog leashed up to the green bike both 1/2 Ridgeback x with bunch of stuff  mostly cur and cattle dog and some pit and amer bulldog.

Those are some fine looking dogs right there. Truthfully I had never been fond of ridgebacks because I have seen the pure ones be very human aggressive, but your crosses look really good.

I am guessing they are pretty much straight catch right? How far out do they tend to hunt for you? I really like the looks of them.

They are like Rcd's with brains they will catch basically anything but if a big nasty boar is willing to really get down and scrap they will actually back off and bay very unlikely that it happens but if it does just go in hammer back ready to shoot cause it is a good one. I haven't seen a sow big enough to get a bark outta em yet. They work good as a team tho most of em go for catching on the head but I have had 2 now that love ripping the ass end when other dogs are on the head and I have a great picture of my male he will catch on the ass on a big boar if alone till help gets there.

Most all my dogs are what I consider cus everyone is different kinda short range but more medium range dogs consistently hunt out around 100 to 400 yards they start hitting 600 to 800 yards or much over that they are on hog most likely.

Thanks guys all the ranges in weight are from 65 to 80 lbs depending on what strain of ridgeback we cross in but that's pretty average over the years of breeding em.

Very good only thing is in the warmer weather since most of them have to have a vest on but between early morning hunts and deperdation ranches you won't catch me out in the middle of the afternoon much anyways. Ya they are extremely athletic dogs that can shut hogs down what I think is extremely fast.

My memory is poor, I think I brought in that nice boar two years ago, last year I went but didn't score, I don't remember who won what last year. no on tracey.dean is my huntin partner.. hes the guy from down here in salinas who always has a rat terrier or two. i thought it was the first one  they had this year but  not sure now lol

oh yeah i know bart and the whole crew. have you ever seen the red hog mount barts dad has in their office? if so that bad boy was caught usin my old petey dog when bart was like 13 or so i think. first time i met bart his brother, dad uncle etc was on that hunt. i will need to scan pictures to the computer and go from there.

Awsome rite on no I haven't seen the mount at all just known bart for awhile now we have some mutual friends and what not never actually hunted together tho.
