Title: Louisiana mud bugs
Post by: charles on March 20, 2016, 11:44:14 am
with all the rain tx and la has had. when and where would be the best place to drive if possible, if not fly in and get 50# of live mud bugs?

where do you live Charles?

central tx, between austin and waco, closer to waco. I'm planning a steak, crab, shrimp and crawfish boil/grilling with an old army buddy down around the houston way, probably at the airport he has his heli stored at.

getting them local sure would be a cheaper bill than possibly flying into south la from houston. it would make for some very very expensive crawfish with the heli rate at $500 an hour.

last week they were 3.40 it think. Might have gone down now tho, their always changing. You can always get them from a fiesta or something but sometimes their good, more times than not theres a lot of dead ones.

just give them a call a little ahead of time in case their running low, they'll hold you a sack or 2. The sacks usually weigh around 30-35 lbs.

which is why i was wanting to get them from a road side truck or small mom n pop shop in the bayous. i remember driving to and from ms in the summer MANY MANY years ago and there were trucks and shops along I-10 selling them live or already boiled. back then they were around .50c a pound live and .75c-$1.00 boiled. i understand 20+yrs later prices will be higher, but buying from a grocery store, naw, not for me. like you said, sometimes they are good and a lot of dead ones. in my area at the local heb, for boiled, they are $5 a pound and live is about $3.50-3.75 a pound.

and in addition to the road side shops/tcks, they usually have the rest of the fixins that go with craw fish, plus the shrimp and crabs. i may even get some fresh salmon and crabs from here in the nw and cook some of them up too.

I like them, they usually get pretty packed this time of year in the afternoons and evenings. They sell them boiled too.

$3.50-3.75 a pound live at the heb in temple. if i can get them closer to houston, the better, since the boil will be down there and I'm really just wanting to do a x-country flt into south la. that should finish out the last few hrs i need to get my pic endorsement for the r-44. plus those at heb aren't of the best size, or at least last yrs crop wasn't of any speakable size. you would spend more time peeling than eating. i enjoy sucking head and eating a$$ as much as the next mud bug lover, but if i have to really work fir it, ill stick to cracking skulls and sucking fingers of the crabs.

yea, monroe is a good drive or flight. when we would go to ms, 99% of the time we would take 20 across north la, through vicksburg and on to jackson, then stray off somewhere east of jackson and head to larual/hattisburg area to see family. but when we did take the 10 route several times, either coming from or going to my uncles house in pascagula,   we always stopped and got bugs in the south and boiled peanuts in the north.
if you could please, call her and see if she can recommend someone down is south la, or hell, ill drive or fly to monroe if i absolutely have to.

id be obliged if you could get me a contact for down south.
