EAST TEXAS HOG DOGGERS FORUM

I just got 2 BMC male pups. I mainly got them to hog hunt but would also like to use them heard cows. Anyone use them for both? 

I got dogs that will work cows and hogs but where I hunt hogs there is no cows

Plenty of guys i know use their dogs both ways, shouldnt be a problem at all.

I know a few guys that go both ways. My uncle does and his dogs are very good at both. His Catahoulas have a hell of a handle. He can send them off of cows to go hunt if he sees some hogs or fresh sign.. Most I know just run e collars when they go hunting and one little buzz off the first set of cows usually puts hogs on the dogs mind.

handle is key ....  east of  here  where I live lot of people have feed bucket cattle and  if  a dog gets on em he's dead ..... I don't want mine to run cattle at all ....

Folks may disagree but I think cows are more intimidating for pups than a hog is because of they're size, I believe it builds confidence, I can get a pretty good idea about what a pup is going to be like by watching him on cows for the first year of his life, once I make the decision whether they are going to be hog dogs or not I'll then break them off of cattle and strictly run them on hogs.

Like Mr. Larry said, having a good handle on your dogs is the key.

I've seen people who use different collars at different times so the dog learns to associate a certain collar with a certain activity and responds accordingly.
