I know what the answer probably is but there might be something I haven't heard about yet so I'm gonna ask anyway..... Is there a miracle cure for an open dog? How to tone it down or shut it up......

I don't see a problem if the dog is good. I guess it's more of a annoying thing to some guys. I have seen guys shock open dogs to try to shut them up didn't work and I thought it was pretty dumb thing to do but to each there own

I have found that different dogs just catch different hogs. Run your open dogs then another night run your silent dogs. I got one that is quiet until she is nipping at their heels. Then she yips at them. I love that dog because when other dogs start baying and she is at my side I know they are trashing and she wants me to know that she ain't got no part of it. But I can't bring her with some people because they don't like that yip she does. But if you like the dog and it gets hogs then do what you want. But be respectful when hunting with other people.

Well I ran this dog kind of as a lets see what happens type deal. She ran several different tracks and as soon as she caught a scent the bawl was on. And every track but 1 was trash. I didn't shock her cause she is doing what comes naturally to her. I just don't see her being my cup of tea. She hunts really hard and stayed busy most of the night. Ranged out really well. She needs a lot of work not trashing. She really had never been worked specifically on and certain quarry for any amount of time for her to know what she's supposed to hunt. Right now she is a great meat dog.

My thoughts are that if one shocks a dog for barking on track the dog might get the wrong message...like running a hog is not the right thing to do...

Yea I didn't mess with her even when I knew she wasn't on a hog. She is gonna make a really good dog if somebody puts work into her. Coon, hogs or whatever... I just can't wrap my head around an open dog. I've ran silent dogs for so long that I guess I'm biased now. But to each his own

I think you did the right thing by not shocking  her and it sounds like she has plenty of hunt . She won't be any kind of hog dog if you trash break her off of them using that e-collar

When she would open up what did your other dogs on the ground do ?
Did they quit what they were working on  and come find her ?
Did it ever get to a point where they would just ignor her and they kept on working their own track ?

Chris, at first they would stop and Go straight to her then after she cried wolf a few times it was an ignore button. But my best dog got gimped up that night and I was working some young dogs so they wasn't real sure what was going on. It ended up being her show in hopes we got lucky haha

Sounds to me like all she has is a trash problem which is easily corrected. When she opens you know she is running something, but it could be anything. On the other side of the coin, your silent dogs could be trashing also, you just do not hear them. lol

I got one that I know will bump a deer every now and then but he quits it pretty fast. Not sayin what I run can't get trashy lol but nah I know she has a trashing problem and that would be fine to try and break if I could stop her being open.  I just don't run open dogs. I have never had luck with them. The drive and bottom she showed made me want to see if the gurus of the sport knew any tricks on toning down an open dog.

I know of several open mouth dogs that went quiet as they aged.  The best I ever owned was full open chop on the first hog of the day and as the day went on she would get quieter.  My recommendation would be to work on trash breaking her and keep feeding her tracks.

Thanks. I appreciate it. It would be a task for sure to get her trash broke but it's a good project
