Title: Eat hematoma
Post by: liefalwepon on October 23, 2016, 03:24:25 pm
So I got a 5 month old pup that's been wrestling around with the big dogs and developed a blood pocket in his ear about the size of a golf ball, I had a domestic pig get the same thing one time and most folks I new said to leave it and it would heal up on its own, well the pups ear is getting real thick and the swelling isn't going down, I Ben draining the fluid out of it daily the last few days but it keeps filling up, anyone have a fix for this?

Lancing it will work but it's gotta stay open to drain so the ear can heal back together. It can heal by itself but the dog will have a "crinkle " ear like a potato chip. Draining it sort of helps but it really needs a hole to stay open to get the ear flap back to flat. Best place too is on the inside of the ear as close to the tip as possible in the swollen part. If the dog will let you lance it and shove a plastic cattle teat cannula in there that keeps it open and draining and will let it heal as long as you keep the end cleaned up. That stays in for 2-3 weeks then just yank it out.

I'll tell ya wat the old vet i worked for 40 years ago did for recurrent hematomas of the ear, he'd open it, on the inside flap. Long incision, then use his office stapler and staple the # 2 out of the ear. Basicly, closed the space with a ton of staples so the fluid couldnt re accumulate
