Title: How to keep dogs in shape
Post by: lacrash on November 28, 2016, 08:38:06 am
With deer season seeming to run on forever in my neck of the woods i was wondering what yall do to keep your dogs in shape during deer season?! Because we all know hog dogs run deer out of the country, but a hog problem is solved by shooting one or two a year at a feeder  ???

I run my beside my golf cart, on a mix of asphalt, grass, and gravel roads, gotta be careful, I started running one of my pups today and didn't realize the asphalt made her pads look like ground meat...

I haven't on him

my other dog is faster .. and I've looked down and seen 25mph with him still going . This is exactly his problem though he thinks we're out there for him to run . He has more show dog in his line then I knew about and has great confirmation( I'm guessing .. not sure what show people look for ) but his instinct is no where near that of my other dog . He does find birds ,  but doesn't hold point .. just wants to run and bust them . he'd probably make a good finder holder or somethin haha the game plan is to run his pads off on wild birds till he decides he's had enough and points . Once he knows chasing is futile I think I'll break him or give him to my hunting buddy . not sure yet

They run like this on four wheeler or horseback .. but with the four wheeler they have a reference as to where I am because of the engine noise . When I run them on horseback I have to kind of sing to them so they know where I'm at .. it doesn't tell them to come in but rather stay out and keep moving forward . You won't see them until they stop on point .

Same setup as Chris posted above, I just used 2x4's on my golf cart, haven't got any harness' yet, they help build the back end up more so than the collars do...

an old treadmill will do if your are short on space to run them or the weather is foul.(http://i1382.photobucket.com/albums/ah245/crustydog/20141230_135129_zpsqbab4zai.jpg) (http://s1382.photobucket.com/user/crustydog/media/20141230_135129_zpsqbab4zai.jpg.html)

Looks similar to my quail dog. Tossing isn't an option for me so they learn to love the treadmill from a very early age. Just slow walking mostly until fully grown.

Looks good ! what's his pedigree ?

Great hunters on top and bottom but unfortunately two different breeds. He was an accidental breeding between a GSP and Pointer from a guy who runs a guide service in Oklahoma.

Been retrieving to hand since the day I brought him home at around 7 weeks old and has loved water from day 1. And yes he likes to get out there - sometimes much further than I want him to but he's always been good about checking in. But as the bird hunting old timers have told me, you can always reel them in a bit closer but you cant teach them to get out further so I'm told it's the better "problem" to have.

Yes , I agree and have lived through that hahaha
