Title: What to give older dogs for joints/arthritis
Post by: Mr. Oinker on March 24, 2017, 07:48:10 pm
I've got a 6 year old black mouth male who has lived a long life as a rough dog. All scarred up and white faced. He can still hunt some and catches like a bulldog, but he kinda runs "crooked" like he is having some joint pain in his back legs. He also can only hunt for a couple hours or couple miles before he is give out. He's in the breeding pen with my lacy gyp right now so hopefully I'll get some pups out of him before he has to be retired but is there anything to give him to help him run easier/longer? Daily supplement or something right before turning him loose to hunt?

I use previcox. It works wonders on dogs and horses.

You can give the the glucosamine/chondroitin tablets for humans also... my vet told me about that years ago.

I have an old rough dog who is just like you describe. I use the gluclosamine hip and joint chewable tablets from tractor supply daily they have helped I also give him a ten day round of Prednisone if I notice him getting any worse good feed helps as well but he's not 2or3 anymore and still can only be hunted about once a week he just doesn't hold his legs up afterwards as much now and can run a little longer than before.

Getting tired after a couple of miles could possibly be caused by heartworms...

Well he isn't necessarily lethargic or anything his legs just can't hold up to a lot of miles through thick brush. No difficulty keeping weight on him, no breathing issues, no coughing. I also worm regularly with Ivermectin

I have found it is harder to keep old dogs in shape, they like older people they need frequent exercise to keep muscle tone and air. I know I have one that gets real lazy and it takes him awhile to get back in shape during Turkey season

I've seen and read about a product called Cetyl M, it's for arthritis in dogs...

Not knocking anybody else's answers, but if the dog had plenty of wind and only joint problems, I've tried all the above and I can tell you something that has worked 100% for my older dogs that get stove up and it is prednisone. Don't give it to them all the time just the night before every hunt. After you've tried it please reply and tell us how it worked for you. I'd start at 15 to 20 mg tablets.
