Title: Yankees hooked on hog hunting. Post by: Cajun on February 06, 2018, 06:52:21 am Joe Hudson and Jonah Place came down and hunted with me. They are bear hunters from Wisc. And Mi. We caught 7 the first day, 6 the second day, 5 the 3rd day, 2 the 4th day and 8 the 5th day. Long week and tired dogs and hunters. First hunt for me and my dogs in almost 3 months since my shoulder surgery. On the hunts were Charlie Gaines, Todd Carruth, Bull Hunter and his son Colt, Tommy Jones and a few others.had some good work out of some out of shape dogs and some long races. Got a few dogs busted up but they will heal and be ready in a couple months.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180206/10f1e26bf852e12e5b876a3d7f862b4e.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180206/919a6558e572464479b25e509616899b.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180206/89fb3ac829be5206906a528c858c8323.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180206/662ba755cb33329ee563f2a3c452a56c.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180206/261c64ad81bcaecad08db9f28f0aa5c3.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180206/0fb6c9d29e7fb4b7b7afbd1a17f86de9.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180206/7cfa34f6d3987eca493270a2b2dd6359.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180206/e0887ee6a3a94346babc9f086dfff605.jpg)

Title: Re: Yankees hooked on hog hunting. Post by: Cajun on February 06, 2018, 09:08:44 am I believe that Joe & Jonah had all they wanted of skinning hogs. They would finish one & I would tell them, hold on pilgrim, I'll get you another one. lol They took home 3 160 qt. ice chests full of deboned meat. On the last hunt, we gave all the hogs we caught away as their ice chest were full.
Title: Re: Yankees hooked on hog hunting. Post by: Mike on February 06, 2018, 12:33:58 pm That's mighty fine week of hog hunting right there. Do they get as excited about coming down to hog hunt as much as we get going up there to bear hunt haha?
Title: Re: Yankees hooked on hog hunting. Post by: Cajun on February 06, 2018, 12:43:12 pm Mike, They tend to get wound up. lol

Title: Re: Yankees hooked on hog hunting. Post by: Cajun on February 06, 2018, 05:46:25 pm Jason, The marsh hunting is the easiest hog hunting I have done & my favorite way of hunting. Not to many long races & you dont have to crawl thru cutovers. Over where I live where we used to hunt off of horses, there is a lot of cutover & the hogs run like a bat out of hell. 30-35 years ago you could have rode a horse anywhere but now it is a lot tougher place to hunt.

I am finally starting to believe my Dr. when he says it will be 6 months to a year before it is healed. It has only been a little over 2 months & I have had cabin fever for a while. It was good to get out & run the dogs. They had about given up on me. It was also nice to start 3 young dogs that had never been hunting & they made every race the old dogs did.

Post by: Cajun on February 07, 2018, 06:54:32 am Rueban, That pic. of the dogs on the bow of the boat, the black one on the left is John, and the pic. of the dogs on the caught hog, The black plott on the hog's head is John too. After the first turnout, he knew what he was bred for.
Title: Re: Yankees hooked on hog hunting. Post by: Mike on February 07, 2018, 07:02:11 am Did the fellas from up north bring their dogs? If so, how did they take to the hogs... seems like they would know they're trashing because it wasn't bear?
Title: Re: Yankees hooked on hog hunting. Post by: c dunn on February 07, 2018, 07:28:10 am That looks like a good hunt. I love the sound of a hound race. I used to have some pretty good plotts but we hunt off horses a good bit and they didn't really fit. Our races were pretty long at times. I've been thinking bout adding a little brindle nose to these curs. I crossed my male cur to a plott jip that belonged to Tommy Whitten a few years ago and most made good dogs.
Title: Re: Yankees hooked on hog hunting. Post by: Cajun on February 07, 2018, 07:38:41 am Mike, In the pic. with the Plotts on the hog, The dog on the right with the purple collar is one of those trashy beardogs. She goes back to my breeding so I know she is trashy. lol At first she was not sure about running a hog but did not take her long to get in the thick of things. Those guys love to come down in Feb. because by then, they are tired of being in that cold weather up there. c dunn, I have seen some really good crosses on Plotts x curs.

Plott male x cur jip vs. cur male x plott jip.Title: Re: Yankees hooked on hog hunting. Post by: Cajun on February 07, 2018, 03:28:59 pm I dont think it matters as long as the Plott is strong in the dept. you want to improve. for example, you want nose and maybe more range. I would make sure the Plott you were breeding to would have a cold nose & a hard hunter. Not all Plotts are cold nose or long range. In fact some of them are pretty sorry. lol

Plott male x cur jip vs. cur male x plott jip.Not to hijack this post and I'll back what Mr. Mike says about starting with stock that have what traits you want, but I read an article by James Crenshaw the legendary APBT breeder, most don't know but he was a plott man as well and he noted that he took two full litter mates that were plott, a male and female, and did the same with some of his Bulldogs, he crossed a male plott to a female bulldog and vice versa, a male bulldog to a female plott just to see if they were any differences, he stated that the resulting crosses were two different types and styles of dogs even though the parents were from the same gene pools in each of their breeds, there has been some research done that the genetic coding received from each parent plays a part in the development of different parts of the brain, in lay mans terms the sire is responsible for one part of the brain and the dam the other, it gets pretty deep when you research what parts of the brain control what bodily functions and as of now it's a speculation and theory being as there's no hard scientific data to 100% back it up, I know I went into science nerd mode on this but is something I've read into a good bit and something I keep an eye out for just to see how much merit and truth there actually is to this, sorry for the hijack Mr. Mike.... Title: Re: Yankees hooked on hog hunting. Post by: NLAhunter on February 07, 2018, 07:40:53 pm I ain't sure if it matters which way like Cajun said I know the crosses we got that are working was out of a catahoula male and plott gyp. I was told by couple different people that they have had best results out of cur male to plott gyp.

Sent from my Pixel 2 using Tapatalk That's all that matters is if it works or not, but there's a reason behind everything if one will dig deep enough to find out the science behind, Tommy used to be my tool pusher with H&P and we did some trading and I wound up with two of the cross y'all are talking about, one leapord spotted bobtail that worked well but wasn't anything to write home about but he got shot by an ignorant neighbor who thought he was doing someone a favor when he seen the dogs bunching some yearlings and the other a black coated male that looks like a plott that my father in law more or less commandeered and uses on strictly cattle and he's a really nice dog.... Title: Re: Yankees hooked on hog hunting. Post by: GOODEN on February 09, 2018, 08:01:15 am Sounds like y'all had heck of a hunt! Congrats!! Sure like the looks of those dogs and nice pics too!! Hoping one day I slow down and get a pup you put up for sale to cross back over some of my plott crosses.
