Title: Valu-Pak dog food
Post by: Reuben on February 23, 2018, 07:41:31 pm
I was thinking of swapping back to Diamond High Energy from Sportsmix black bag on account I have had to increase the feed to the dogs to help maintain the dogs weight...Diamond High Energy was good at maintain weight but the smell of the poop was nasty and it attracted flies more than with sportsmix...

Well I found the Valu-Pak dog food close to me and am real happy to try it on my dogs...the kibble is small like that of sportsmix in the blue back which I really like that...the price is exactly the same as sportsmix  for both bags of food they offer...the Valu-Pak dog food in the black bag is 20% fat and 28% protein...the blue bag is 18% fat and 26% protein...both are gluten, corn and soy free...

it's a no brainer...for the same price I will stay with the black bag and it also says to feed it to puppies...it seems the blue back is exactly the same feed as the black bag just lower fat and protein...probably will be a month before fully transitioned over on account I still had about 100 pounds of sportsmix...

We are feeding a litter of Dogos that we’re weaning the black bag of Value pak Cannons was out and we needed Feed and they had this available. The pups seem to be doing good on it. Fat and healthy. For the money Sportmix is the way to go when they offer the 55 pounds for the 29.00 but like  I said Cannons  was out. It is free of any fillers and supposed to be the equivalent to Victor I’ve heard. We will transition the big dogs back to black bag Sportmix once the pups are gone. Pups are maintaining a healthy weight at 6 weeks my biggest male is 12 pounds and smallest is 8 pounds and the females around the same weight.

I appreciate the feed back and will watch the dogs closely...but if I make another swap it won't be back to spoprtsmix...it will probably be Diamond High Energy...

Just bought 200lbs of the Valu Pak 24 20 FREE (no corn, soy, etc).  It is in a gray bag.  No one has carried it up in this area until now.  That is all they had except for the maintenance formula.

I’m going to give it a shot.  If I don’t like it, I’ll go back to the Black Sportmix.

The Diamond Extreme Athlete is the best food diamond makes hands down. It will keep the weight on them if you hunting hard. It is a more money...but you can mix it with a bag of the Diamond high energy to make it go farther.

I fed it for a while, and got 3 bad tons in a row that was as dry as a powder house floor, and my dogs fell of fast since then they have fixed the problem but I have since swapped to showtime and the only complaint is that they keep a little to good on it, I'm sure something will come along one day that will make me change my mind but so far it hasn't and that's Showtime dog feed, a lot of the deer dog hunters around here fed value pak for along time but most have swapped over to showtime, to each his own and you'll never know unless you try it...

We switched from sportsmix to value pak a couple of months ago. Tractor supply wouldn't have it half the time and are the only locals that carried it. I thought our dogs looked OK on it but I can sure tell a difference now that they are on the value pak. Good sustainable energy and maintain good muscle. I don't like feeding too much protein  if in this Texas heat. The 24/20 or the 26/18 are good for us. Don't mind the 28/20 in the cooler time of year but don't like switching  a lot. Mixing it with the other is o. I'm liking it Reuben.

I have been feeding it for 2 years now love it. I had same problem with sport mix dogs losing weight looking bad in cold weather couldn’t feed them enough. I feed black bag to everything

I have been feeding the Red bag 24/20 for a couple of years now. It is probably the equivailent of diamond Hi Energy but they do crapp a lot & I do have to feed more in the winter when I am hunting them. I have had to feed more with any dog food tho in the winter.

Yes Mike...years ago I saw a chart on how much to increase dog food as the temperature dropped but haven’t been able to find it...I just increase as needed to keep the dogs looking fit and cut back as it warms up to maintain a decent weight...thanks E. Barnes...

i've had a hellufatime this winter . i wormed for everything , i fed diamond hienergy , sportsmix in the black bag and everything i could think to do . been throwing them raw meet at times and just in the last few days they have been picking back up .

not talking about all of'em just a couple . some stay too fat and others stay too thin , it seems the meat  helps more than anything .

It not quite a week yet that I have been mixing 50/50 Valu-pak dog food with sportsmix black bag and the dogs are looking better and looks like I might be cutting back on the feed in the next week or two...I have always preferred the smaller kibble dog food for my dogs but further down in the priority list...and Valu-oak dog food has it and the listing on the bag to feed it to puppies a plus...usually when the bag says for puppies it usually is a good feed...time will tell

Lacy Man...I hate to hear the bad news about the cow patties...right now the patties are slightly smaller than normal but can really tell it with the pups...but then right now I am feeding 50/50 until I run out of the sportsmix black bag...

Were you feeding the Valu-Pak black bag when you were getting the cow patties?

I never had a problem with their stool being loose, if anything it made stick to the kennel floor worse than anything else, it’s a good quality feed I’m sure you’ll like, I liked it just had a run of bad luck with it but it has since been fixed and I would probably swap back to it if it weren’t to far to drive and get it now...

good reading. I've been feeding diamond chicken or lamb rice. been doing good for me, but I'm going to look at the valu pak and do a 50/50 blend.

JDT them dogs that can’t get fat maybe getting really cold and there body is burning there fat to keep them warm fresh water every day is better then feeding one the best dog food in the world and it’s cheaper and u ain’t got to go to the store and get it and people never clean there water they just fill it up not saying u don’t clean it just telling u what might be happen

I like the Valu-pak in the black bag...dogs and pups are doing good on it...less to pick up and easier to wash down...also paying 3 dollars less than sportsmix black bag...

Well......after 2 months of the grey bag I’m going back Sportmix.  Was a 25 minute drive to get the VP and the price not any better so it was really going to have to win me over. Dogs don’t look bad, but don’t look any better or hunt differently from an endurance standpoint. Not putting down the product at all, just didn’t see any difference.

I am saving about $3.50 a bag just by switching over from sportsmix...the dogs eat less, poop less and have quite a bit more stamina...I couldn’t  pull two dogs off track on account their tt15 collars have been sent in fo repairs this past Saturday...these two dogs started at 7:30 AM and I finally pulled them off at 4 PM...

Anyone Kno what the preservative in this food is?
Well it must be bad because they don't even list it.
I asked the lady at the feed store about it left my number with her she said she would contact the rep and call me,well I never got that call.

I’m feeding the blue bag 26 18 my dogs are doing great on it. I’m running my cat hounds around a 100 miles a week and there holding there weight in this heat .  I fed sports mix for about 15 years and I will never buy another bag . The last year or so it has been really inconsistent had dogs almost starving there selves to death because they wouldn’t eat it. Somthing is bad wrong with it .

With the Valu-Pak 28-20 the dogs can hunt quite a bit longer than when I had them on sportsmix 24-20...

Yep.  It's good food.  Feed it to dogs feed it to pups.  Cheaper and according to the label better food than sportmix diamond and Victor.  I've been on it for a few months now and all the dogs look good.

I have fed diamond high energy for the last 5-6 years with no problems at all except the price, which is over $30 with tax.  I have never fed sportmix (about same price as diamond), but I know there are people who love it and ones who hate it. Personally, from what I have heard, I lean toward the negative side. Can't afford victor if you have many dogs. Valu-pak is what it is--valu-pak (Victor=winner, diamond=valuable, showtime=ready to steal the show). Mine did alright on valu-pak for a few months then fell off hard! (I have seen valu-pak any where from $20-25.) Won't hold a working dog, people will learn this soon enough. I have recently switched to showtime, and it has been working great for me. Cost $25 plus tax for 24-20 in northeast Texas. Research shows that the field trial people and top bay pen guys feed showtime. I will never push a dog like the field trial people do and they feed showtime, so I expect to feed showtime from now on.

I was feeding the red bag Value pac 24/20 & it was so so. I was paying $19.00 a bag buying it by the ton. In the summer it was ok but the dogs did have a loose stool. In the winter when I was hunting 3-4 days a week it simply would not keep the weight on them. I was feeding 1 1/2 times in the winter then what I feed in the summer & my dogs would fall off. Before that I fed the Showtime 24/20 & jmo was a much better feed. I fed that quite a while but the price jumped up to $23.50 a bag buying it by the ton. Dogs held up good on it but i made the switch to Value pac to save money. In the long run I bet I did not save much.   Now I am feeding Pride 24/20 paying $22.00 a bag buying by the ton. I was amazed how fat my dogs got feeding the same amount as I was feeding the Value Pac & had to cut back. Been feeding this for a couple of months & so far like it a lot.

X2 on the pride.  It is good feed for sure. I was telling a buddy about it and while he was over one evening I showed him how much I was feeding the dogs and the next week he got some and found the same results of feeding less pride feed vs the value pack.
