What’s the best dog food tired of feeding them

I have tried just about all the common dog food brands and in my opinion on my dogs Showtime 27/20 is hard to beat. Good quality feed at a good price.

Chris, I switched to the Showtime 24/20 last year and it’s the best I’ve ever fed. I fed Sportsmix 24/20 for nearly 20 years and have tried just about every other brand along the way. I’m feeding 1/2 the amount of Showtime... dogs look and perform great on it.

Caleb mentioned the 27/20 about... it’s fine in the cooler months, but dogs will run real hot on the 27%  in the summertime.

Mike, can you give some more info about why the higher protein makes dogs run hot? I’m using 27/20 pride orange bag

I don’t know exactly why it causes dogs to run hot... just something I’ve seen and experienced over the years.

The Showtime dog food is the best I’ve fed as far as minimizing waste(poop) I fed the 27/20 the majority of the year and loved it with no issues. But I noticed my grown dogs falling off some and a couple looking not nearly as slick as I like them about a 3 or 4 weeks ago.  I buy a pallet at a time when I buy food, so I bought a pallet of local food I’ve fed on and off for years. The dogs have since picked back up where I like them at. Whatever the case may be(and I have various opinions on), after 9-12 months I have to swap dogs foods for a month or two. I’m not the only person that has noticed this happening their dogs either. After this pallet I will go back to the Showtime or ValuePak. Both are good dog foods.

Sort of off topic but one thing I’ve noticed is that my dogs have solid, dark stool at the house. Then when they hunt some of them have diarrhea and are stopping to poop every 10-15 minutes, any idea why? The two Ladners I have that are littermates tend to be worse about it. No issues at the house though. This has always happened regardless of what I’m feeding them

River run Has been as good as I’ve found and I’ve fed everything except sports mix and retriever because i don’t hate them that much lol. High pro in the winter high NRG in the summer. I feed 3 quarts every other day. Dogs look awesome whether I’m hunting 3 days a week or a month

Nerves and knowledge. They know what's coming.

High proteins are usually coupled with high fat. This diet makes the bodywork harder = hotter during the available protein and fat.

I gotcha, I just started feeding with probiotics so I’m hoping that may help some

Dogs get hotter because it takes more energy to break down proteins than it does carbohydrates. So the higher the protein the more energy they spend breaking it down. A healthy adult in its prime is only gonna use about 18 to 20 percent protein. Any more than that has to be gotten rid of. We feed more than that because of the usable protein available in a particular feed plus the fact that these are working dogs which ups the necessary protein. Excessive protein creates heat. It takes calcium to rid the body of excess protein so if the animal isn't getting enough calcium in its diet then where does it get it from? The bones and the rest of the system. It's hard on the liver and kidneys too if they have to shed a lot of excess protein no matter if its nonusable protein or excessive amounts. By non usable I mean its protein and its present but the dog can't use it because it can't break it down. Chicken feathers (a big part of chicken-by-products) are a good example of this. They are very high protein but a dog can't break them down. It still has to be gotten rid of. That's what I think I've learned about it over the years lol

I seen it first hand and very quickly.I feed Victor My feed store was out of the 24/20 two weeks ago so I got 2 bags of 30/20 that's 4 days of feed.I took them hunting on the 3rd day of feeding it and they weren't even the same dogs they quit way early and were visibly struggling panting and labored movements.I have noticed this in the past as well but last week was incredibly noticeable I wouldn't have fed the dogs I saw the other night and it was because of 3 days of hot feed.Switched them back to 24/20 and hunted yesterday the temps and humidity were way higher and zero signs of heating up and no quit.

I feed Purina Sport high performance 30/20. Probably more protein than needed when hunting 1-2 days a week. But I notice when I hunt 3-4 days it seems to be the only thing I tried that keeps weight on them.

I can mostly feed by what they look like. They don't eat much. Less than 1/2 to 1/4 of a coffee can normally and 3/4 to a full when hunting hard. They seem to need the extra calories. It is not cheap though. When not hunting much they can get fat pretty quick!

I've never had a problem with heat.

Raw is the best I have tried...BUT, Way too much work and time consuming these days.

I have fed about every food mentioned so far along with Diamond HI Energy. About 3 months ago I switched mine over to Valu Pak. They're currently on the black bag grain free 28/20 and love it. Dark solid stools and they are slick as ever. I'll put them on 26-18 when it warms back up.  IMO it's the best i've tried.
