Title: 11/1, Open field Sow
Post by: Silverton Boar Dogs on November 02, 2009, 12:21:43 am
Hunted tonight with Donny and Scott, Some farmers south of us asked if we could help with a hog problem in a half section of hay ground. They had a 100% loss on the haygrazer crop, wish they had called sooner. Scott scouted this morning and we headed down there before dark. Hog tracks everywhere. Put my strike dog Cat down with 2 good dogs of Scotts and started roading around the section. Half way around Cat opens one time off in a draw and she was by herself. She worked the track silent and in a few minutes she came bayed about a half mile out of the draw in a CRP field. We held the rest of the dogs and drove closer. She was in a running gun fight and the machine gun chop never let up. She was now a mile from where she started the track and bayed up solid. She was in the middle of an open CRP field by herself hamering away. We sent the calvery(Donnys dog Weisle and his young dog and a year old catahoula of mine) because I was sure the hog would break. I grabed Adora and started heading to the bay. The stop dogs did their job and I heard a grunt followed by a short squeal, I sent Adore from 250 yds and she sealed the deal.

Big fat sow was caught solid, and Donny's young dog and Scott's pup both had a mouth full of ham and had her sat down, we were very happy to see that we have a new pair of nut dogs in the pack. All the young dogs did well. Cat did a supper job moving that track and stopping the sow in the open, one on one.

Thanks,
Paul T

We get a few hogs that color every year, she was pretty. Thats one I would like to have skined out and saved the hide.

I was just happy to be out of the Milo for a change where the dogs had a good chance to really work a hog. Lots of hogs in the Milo, but its hard on dogs.
