Title: Rank Boar in the Rain
Post by: Shotgun66 on May 31, 2021, 10:12:17 am
Overcame my tired mind, aching body, rain, and general lack of motivation this morning and made a quick hunt this morning. I wanted to get Sandy ( 10 month old prospect ) back in the saddle after taking her first poke on Saturday.

Got to the spot and kicked Rousty & Sandy out into a cedar & live oak draw. Just free casted. No sign to speak of. I was gonna walk them to a thicket where I’ve had some luck in the past. They fired out 330 yards and jumped one. Rousty located and the race was on. Sandy is yippin on hot tracks. Hope she grows out of it. Any way, as luck would have it, the boar went up the draw and bayed 173 yards from the truck. Sandy made the race and bayed like a champ. She was backed off outside the thicket he was in. Rousty was nose to nose with him swappin slobber. Cut Jet in from 20 yards with a clear path and the fight was on. Got him stuck and assessed the damage. Rousty took a pretty good cut at the base of his tail. Took a couple pics and got home and doctored him up. He will be out a couple weeks. Yeah thats a good one ,, that gyp prob got it figured out now..  Its a balancing act what a dog has to figure out when it comes time to hold a hog in a bay.  That dog has to be smart enuff to know just how much pressure it takes for each hog to stay bayed...  Every hog is different and it takes a dog smart enuff to know each hog is different..   Itll save lots of busted bays and vet bills too... Hope your dog heals up quick

Thanks Highwater. I ain’t gonna say she’s got it figured out but she’s dam sure applying herself to learn.

I agree with you about each hog, hunt, and bay being unique. A dog must be able to learn from experience and apply it in the woods. A dog with hog sense will make you scratch your head sometimes. I have personally watched a top shelf, cheating find dog top a ridge and look at a draw below on a track. The other dogs were nose down running the scent funnel. He assessed the situation and said “ if I was a hog, I would be here” and ran directly to the spot where the hogs were. He was smart and used all 6 senses to find them. He guessed sometimes and sometimes got outclassed in trailing contests. But over 100 hunts he would find and bay hogs ahead of the pack 7 out of 10 times.....and relay and bay again. He was a handful once you got him in hogs.

The short straight knives on a 150 to 200 lb boar with an attitude sure enough do some damage.
