There is no "best" breed for hog dogs, only a preference of how you like to hunt. There can be alot of variation in a breed of dogs, the line of dogs it comes out of is more important than the breed

thats a almost impossible question to answer. All breeds have their jobs, some do it better than other. it pretty much all depends on the dog. Good bloodline is always a plus, but that doesnt mean a dog is going to be worth anything. You can go pay a butt load of money for a registered, high pedigree dog, and it not be worth 2 dollars. You can turn around and pick a mutt up off the side of the road, and it could turn out to be a bad to the bone dog. JMO

There really is no answer to that.  There is a lot of variety out there with different breeds and crosses.  You just have to hunt with some different folks and figure out what works best for you.  The dogs I like with the way I hunt may not work as well for you hunting different terrain and a different style.

No dogs are probably best for the hogs!  ;D Like already mentioned it depends on your style of hunting but basically you are looking for 1 dog that can find a hog, shut it down and keep it there until you arrive and then you wanna multiply that by 3 and create a pack that will be a hogs worst nightmare.

There really isn't a best dog.

I've hunted a lot of different dogs, and a yellow black mouth cur or Catahoula would be on the top of my list as the all around, most consistent hog dogs w/ closed mouths.

Crossing those breeds w/ some better nose can also produce some longer range, more consistent dogs who can take a good track and run it out a little futher.

Are you just startin out or something?

It's impossible to group what someone would refer to as good and what's not simply by breed.

If I were just starting out, I would first pick which breed was most visually appealing to me then research bloodlines and find people with that particular breed that matches your intended hunting style.  Within each and every breed there are dogs on all ends of the spectrum....short range, long range...rough, loose...open on track, closed on track...hot nosed, cold nosed...etc, etc, etc.

Also, I would NEVER cross two seperate breeds of dogs thinking your going to end up with a litter of pups somewhere in the middle of each.  Simply does not work that way.  What you'll get is some dogs like the father, some like the mother, some like generations past, and if your lucky maybe a few that combine traits of both.  Breed the same dogs again, and you'll probably get something completely different.

If your new to hunting with dogs, spend some time hunting with as many different folks as you can.  Make a good hand in the woods...willing to help...quick to listen and slow to talk and people will be glad to have you along.  See for yourself the different styles, and types of dogs used before buying into someone's personal reasoning of why their way is best.

what everyone else said...also you need to look in to how the dogs act around the house. jagd are great hog dogs but they require a lot of your time. you have to handle them a lot when young and if you don't keep them busy as they get older they go nuts around your house. i would love to own a jagd but my time doesn't allow me to get them in the woods 2-3 times a week to keep them grounded.

findindg good dogs is a hard deal. most people on hear are still formulating their pack and they are always refining it. my personal opinion is to get a pair of pups from proven lines and one older dog. get a great handle of the pups and let the older dog do the training. there is no BEST breed of dogs. good luck in your hunt for a hog dog.

I HAVE FOUND THAT THE DOGS THAT CATCH THE MOST HOGS ARE THE BEST ONES FOR HOG HUNTING!
