Title: What I have been up to.
Post by: Cajun on September 22, 2022, 07:56:31 pm
The knife with the bone scales I made for my daughter’s birthday. She said she was going to put it in a drawer and just get it out to look at. Lol

The two integral knives with deer antler scales I made out of a coil spring. (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220923/4e264e193541711eb0ab77d765f724ff.jpg)

Those look real nice. I’ve always thought the rasps made for a good looking blade. I don’t think I’ve used a blade made of coil springs. I assume that is a high carbon steel?

Springs are commonly made from 5160 carbon steel and will harden to a pretty good blade steel. There are other mixes of steel in many of the new springs tho. Those look real good Cajun!

Very nice work Cajun. The handles on the bottom two are eye catching.

Thanks everybody. Like WOW said most coil springs and leaf springs are 5160 steel which works very well for knives. Quenched in Parks 50. Not every brand of horse rasps make good knife steel. A lot of them are just case hardened and to soft for knives. The heller red tang rasp quenched in a salt water brine (Super Quench) harden very well. It’s a shame because I have a ton of Belotta Rasps but could not get them to harden.

Boy those look good Mike, professional grade.   I don't go through many rasps these days but oddly enough I bought my first  Heller Red Tang and really like it.

I like the Belotta rasps, especially for the money!
