Title: 10-12-10 bow buck
Post by: Doggie on October 13, 2010, 12:57:27 am
I went out to my uncles farm today in Needville to do a little bow hunting.  He said all he had at his feeder was a big 6 pointer that needed to be shot a nubbin buck and a doe.  I wanted to get the 6 so I could make some jerkey and sausage.  I got to the stand around 3:30.  At about 4:30 things started happening.  First, the nubbin buck shows up followed shortly after by the doe.  The 6 was right behind but he refused to step out of the woods.  He would put his head and neck out but no more.  I watched him make scrapes for about 10 minutes then here comes some pigs.  The 6 bristles up and chases the sow and pigs away from his area.  First time that I have seen a deer chase pigs away.  The buck comes back and continues to check his scrape line.  I then hear a low grunt followed by crashing.  I turn around and a good 10 approaches the 6 and they begin a fight.  The 6 makes short work of the ten and sends him packing.  He then turns back to the doe which is about done with the corn and starts to make his way under my stand.  He reaches the string I used to pull my bow up with smells it and takes off to the open field behind me with the nubbin and doe in tow.  I can make out images through the trees but can't tell which deer is which.  Suddenly, the doe comes running back by the feeder followed by the nubbin buck.  There is an older mature buck I assumed to be the six in hot persuit.  I draw back and grunt to stop the buck.  He stops about 30 yards and I release "wack" good shot deer runs off I hear him crash and wait.  I walked up to where I shot the buck to see a bloody arrow and good blood.  I back out and gave him some time and called my uncle who was visiting with my mom and they came out to help me track.  A short tracking job revealed that the deer was another buck that has 8 maybe 9(he has a sticker at the base of his horns) scoreable points and two broken crab claws.  He is no monster but is my personal best with a bow.  As soon as my wife shows me how to post pictures I will put them up.
