I am beginning to feel that way as well, all hogs are fun to catch, but I like the challenge of a hog who is almost as smart as the dogs.

Almost.

If the dogs routinely get outran by many different hogs, you may do well to remember the old bull young bull story.
Young bull says to old bull," look at all those cows!! Lets run down there and breed a couple!" old bull says "let's walk down there and breed them all"

I will a sure u mine have plenty of dust on them. The only time mine have been hunted was the bumpers competition and the tdha. Witch they both placed in.  They did get out run by a boar hog in the bumpers. No excuses for it. But that will get a dog culled around here getting beat to many times they need to put a hog at the end of the race. I do have a cousin that has two at of my dogs that have the dust knocked off of them that sure can get it done and show you. But plan a long night. They ran one for seven hrs the other night. But put him at the end of the race. Right now I'm enjoying the internet hog hunting.lol

I hope one of these days you'll tell the story about the high speed getaway one of your cowboys made after repo'in a herd of cows, ( bad boys bad boys, whatcha gonna do....)

I found that young dog that I'd told about, AND, it lead to another one of my weak stomach stories.

Hell yeah, I don't know have the people on this site now either, it was sure was enjoyable in the old days!!

I agree, I like a good runner too. Any dogs can catch the the ones that just sit there and Bay, it takes the good ones to shut down the runners consistently! Sure wish we woulda sucked that first big boy up in the Bumpers. It'd have been a different story if I could have sent my bull dog in there I do believe.. We've been twice since bumpers, our dogs are as mad at us as yours are You!!

Tony most people don't understand what it takes to get them runners stopped and you ain't going to figure it out on no thread on here cause it can't be explained.

I'll agree and disagree at the same time with loving the runners... You do appreciate it a lot more when you get smoked a few times, and then finally stop that sucker and get him/her bayed up. That's no doubt! But at the same time, it's also nice to have a few of those easy quick hunts mixed in between...  ;)

Here is what I've found after many years of trying it all. It is not a matter of loose or rough. It is a simple matter of better dogs. I've found that dogs from great stock working familys have the inbred instincs to know when to get rough and when to be loose. They come here knowing how to work stock. The burning desire to stop an animal thats leaving the herd or running off is also bred in them. To be a top stock dog, he also has to be very fast and athletic, which comes in handy stopping a runner. With all that being said, everyone gets outrun sometimes and you can't catch them all.

Why is it that there are so many toothy hogs he gets on? Is it high fence? Or what?

Genetics... there are very few high fence places up in them mountains where the big toothies roam. Just thousands upon thousands of acres of some of the most beautiful country you'll ever see. And the fences that are there don't mean anything to the hogs... they go where they want to.

Yup, genetics. I also wonder if calcium rich environment has anything to do with tooth size, but I just don't know. Teeth are teeth, not antlers and I have a hard time believing that diet has much to do with the oversized chompers.

In fort end county for example at the one particular property where Kevin and I caught all the big saber toothed hogs last year, the diet and environment is no different than any other property around but for some reason even the mature sows in there had serious hardware. I think it is just a landlocked hog island with inbred genetics.

Hmmmm... Mountains... Where does he hunt out of? And I would think that protein intake still has something to do with teeth size as it does with antlers... If there is a big protein source in the area that would probably make a big difference, IMO... Are there a lot of deer ranches around there?

Not saying it isn't possible, but how are TEETH the same as Antlers?? And if if they were, how would PROTIEN increase the growth of a body part that's not made from proteins?

I know that Teeth are not Antlers, but they actually both need protein to produce...

Well, both antlers and Ivory (teeth in this case) need amounts of protein to grow efficiently. I also know that it is a combination of other minerals as well that helps. But this is why I ask... Seems on the Ranch (Las Campanas) that I help manage the protein is a huge factor in the antler growth, but at the same time... the ranches that have hogs on them as well that feed protein for deer normally have bigger than average teeth as well... It is just an assumption, but that is why I ask.

"Deer need both protein and minerals to grow their antlers. This is in contrast to horned animals whose horns are made of keratin (like fingernails), who do not shed, and who need only protein to grow their horns optimally."

"Ivory tusks and teeth consist of an inner pulp cavity surrounded by dentine. Dentine is a combination of mineralized connective tissues and collagen proteins. An external bony layer called cementum, commonly called bark or rind, covers the dentine."

Just a little insight... I figure if there were abnormal levels of protein around the area JP is hunting that it would make a difference. If there isn't then that theory goes out the window... LOL! and maybe is it what you've said just a calcium enriched environment Just an interesting thought and figured I'd ask because I do not know...  ;D
