Title: hunting partners, who and why
Post by: txmaverick on August 19, 2009, 02:11:46 pm
Who makes a good hunting partner and why do you hunt with them?

I dont hunt with just the same person or persons any more, havnt for some time now.
I have about 9 people that go with me from time to time, one or two of them are always along (doesn't include family).
These 9 range from teenage boys to one man in his 70s.
Some are land owners that got hooked on it and just love to go, so I take them everytime I go to thier ranch.

For me a hunting partner doesn't need any dogs, truck, land to hunt or anything. Just be pleasent, friendly, curtious, respectful and love the sport. Some of the ones that hunt with me do have dogs and/or land, but that is a very very small part of why I hunt with them. But just as in dogs you get a rotten apple from time to time, the person that has never been but thinks they know it all, the one that complains the whole time (its to hot, its to cold, its to late) and of course the lazy ones that have no desire to move off thier ass to help with anything.

Anyway thanks to any and all that have gone with me over the years on a regular basis, to list a few that have put up with me, and if I missed you forgive me.
Kelcie, Trey, Jesse Paul, Taylor, Tad, Lisa, Jamie, Steve, Clyde and any others I over looked.

I feel very fortunate to have the friends that I do that I hunt with.  Above all I think you need to trust the other person with your life and your dogs life.  They have helped me carry out dogs and fix them up, they know what I am going to do and I know what they are going to do.  I would go into a fox hole with any and all of em.  I also appreciate their patients these days as I can't be as a gung ho as I used to and they are still good enough to let me go hunt with em and will come with me when I get ready to go.  There are plenty of people that I will let come along and go hunting but those that will be beside you in a bind are few and far between.  Hunting friends are special people, like family.
Matt

majority of the time, it just me and my wife with our dogs.  we seem to do the best when its just us 2.  she knows what to do and the dogs listen to her just the same as me.

we have a few friends that like to go with us, but they dont have any dogs or places to go. but they are more than willing to help when we get one caught, whether in an open field or in a real bad mud hole.  i enjoy taking those people.  Trusting you hunting partners is a must.

On the other side of that, since I am just getting into this, I appreciate the chance to go. But not really knowing a persons ways and habits, I tend to be a bit standbackish so I can see how he does things. But if there is something to do, just point and tell me or my boy, Zach and we will be in the middle of it the best we can.

After a trip or 2 where we know the routine, then it's game on to the best of our ability.

I gotta say I have met some great guys in this sport and I hunt with a bunch of good ones. But I have been hunting with my buddy Joe (hog stalker) for a bunch of years. and we coon hunted before hog hunting. I have had my best hunts as well as my worst with him. As far as I can remember we aint ever got cross. when he is out of town or busy and I hunt without him, it just aint the same. We aint near as young as we used to be but just as game.

Thanks Joe for being a good friend and hunting buddy. You are on my GMF list!!!

bobby, i know for me with a new person, I want them to ask before doing anything. You are right learn thier ways dont just jump in, that can cause more trouble in the long run. Ask questions then ask again as for as I am concerned, just cause we did one thing on a hunt last night doesnt mean I want it done the same way again. Just be willing to help is the main thing if you dont know then ask but its best to ask anyway.

I hunt with alot of different people I have ran into a few bad ones but for the most part they have been good!!! I enjoy meeting new people and looking and talking dogs.....I have a few that I like hunting with that have made good friends and  I would trust them with my bank acount number!! Someone who supports there own habbit and bring there own supplies is one of the things I think is good with a hunting partner.....I never let anyone use my dogs but there are a few that if they called and said they needed one or the whole heard I would tell them to come get them!!!They are true hunters and if it happened with them it would have happened with me!!!!

That right there is the biggest compliment I think a hunter can receive, at least in my opinion.  A month or so ago, I was down to having only one dog that could keep hunting. I had three different people offer to send their dogs my way. Each one of them said to come take my pick, and use them as long as I needed them. It sure meant a lot to me knowing they trusted me with their dogs.

I am pretty much in agreement with Matt when it comes to hunting partners. A hunting partner will answer the phone at any hour to help you track dogs, locate a vet, help you tend to dogs, or any other thing that may come up. If I am truly in a bind, I know who has my back, and they know I have their back.

You can borrow my wife, my kids, horse, truck, money even young dogs but I would never send one of my top dogs with anyone.
Not that I think they are safer with me but if one of my best gets killed I want to be there for it.
Its like me telling my wife to wake me before she has a wreck, not that I can stop it, I just want to see it coming.

For me a good hunting partner is a like minded person with the same work ethic, drive, and goal that you have. Anything greatly different will cause a conflict eventually.

I love hunting with different folks and making new friends but I tend to stray from tit bags, complainers, and bad mouthers.
Partners and friends should be ready and willing to be vented on from time to time but I dont have time for constant complaining and bad mouthing. Fortunately folks like that have been few and far between in my hunting life.
I hunt with a lot of folks for a lot of different reasons.
Some are good hunters that I can learn from wile others are just interesting people I want to get to know that are interested in my sport. Then you have those guys that are just plain fun to be around.
I can get a little too serious at times and guys like that balance me out.

My favorite time to hunt is by myself and with my son but the most rewarding is when Im hunting with other folks.

I love hunting with the group of guys that I get to go out with. It is great having some freinds that have the same general outlook on life and politics, and I have never had the chance to meet as many good people on a consistant basis as what I have hog hunting. Most people we hunt with never would ask for help but if they did they would be the first group of gentleman I would drop what I was doing and do whatever it took to help them. (and who else can you call at the weird hours we all keep that arent drug addicts/alcoholics) Everyone has strengths and weakness and they seem to mesh well when getting the job done, hunting partners seem to get to know each other alot more in a much shorter period of time than do the avg. freinds-I trust my hunting partners more than my college freinds.

I hunt with the same two guys everytime I go unless I go by myself. Not only would I let either one of them take my dogs and best dog but One of them has several times and I never have to worry about whats happening. He will try just as hard and probably harder to keep them safe and I have seen that. And when were in a bad situation I dont have to look around to see where they are cause they are always right there. But I also consider both of them my friends and not just hunting buddies.

I also think that huntin with folks that think alike is a good start, it seems like you never have to ask they just know whats next. I've hunted with a few on here and couldn't ask for any better company while in the woods and runnin dogs, rather catchin or not. Yall know who you are ;), thanks and I'll hunt with these guys anytime anywhere, and heck I'd even let these fellas borrow any dog I have if they needed it, and before anyone thinks or says it YES I have great dogs that do there job perfect for me, thats just to show what kind of people they are, my dogs are like my kids. On another note from experience I also enjoy taking people that are just bein introduced into this great sport both young and old. The look of excitement along with a fixed grin on thier faces is priceless.

Damn guys! Reading through this thread really gos a long way to show what real solid hunting partners and friends should be about. I have had the oppurtunity to tag along with a couple of my uncles and ran the dogs with a few friends on a few occasions but here in Hawaii there is a real shadyness and akwardness about fellow hunters and "their spots" and their secrets of the trade. I experienced this from my uncles for as long as I can remember and kinda took it personal and started "running my own pack" with just my knife while I was still in high school. I scouted my own forests and how to get there, Got lost many times and  even slept in the forests with my pack on a few occasions!  :) It's been a learning experience but I actually would have it no other way because it has made me who I am today and gives me a feeling of connection while in the forests. Recently I have been tagging along with my Brother in law and showing him the spots that I have found to hold nice hogs or the places I like to train my young dogs in. He is actually a really good guy and I enjoy his company, He trips out on some of the stories I tell him while we are hunting but I think he enjoys my company as well (I hope). I just wanted to say it is really nice having someone who enjoys having you join them and share in our sport! Have a good one guys!!

I agree good huntin partners are few and far between but i have been fortunate to have a group of good friends . I consider a good friends to hunt with are the ones that have goals in mind on perserving and producing quality dogs, cull ones that need culled, try and hunt and at bay when possible, help with injured dogs, call u when a hunt is planned, and dont always expect something from u,if u have something to say then say and not be a big tit and let things linger, and most important everyone enjoy the hunt and have the best of times together for its the memories that will last. Good huntin!!!

I have several hunting buddies, but the ones I hunt with most are my two boys and Paul T (SilvertonBoarDog).  My boys are 14 & 10 but they can get it on when they are needed.  I think being ranch raised plays a big part in that.  I know I can trust any of the three of them with my life, and they all know that I've got their backs anywhere, anytime!

A good hunting partner is hard to find, you can find people to hunt with or folks to hunt with you, but a hunting partner that you can trust with your dog's and your back, their hard to get. I been huntin with Mule Man for alot of years and we have caught alot of hogs together and treed probly a million coon's, it's been alot of fun huntin with that dude over the years, the one thing I like about muleman, He's alway's ready to go no matter what time, if it's rainin, if it's so cold I'm cryin when I'm loadin the dog's he's still ready to go I consider him not only a hunting partner but one of my very best friends. I hunt with several guys and have had a good time with them all, most of the people I have met through hog doggin have been really good folks, but it's really nice to have someone that you see eye to eye with on everything and you beleave you could trust them with your life or your dog's life. Thanks for all the good memories and good times DE.
