Title: The Plott Thickens.
Post by: b.b.b kennels on March 19, 2014, 11:04:17 am
There's been a big number of yellow and spotted dogs thrown up here in the last few months and a good looking dog is a good looking dog. But I know that there's some Plott guys on here and I feel deprived of the brindle and black. Lets see some PLOTTS! Don't care if it's started, finished, an up and comer or a past favorite. Show your Plotts and tell us about them!

Boy, you would think for a nice bear hunt like that, there would be some smiles on somebodies face.

Mike,

All those great bear hunters knew after the pic came the real work.  Some had to go back to shore and get gas while others cleaned the bear.  Sure is a lot easier to tree the bear and walk away!

Can you run dogs on bear in Louisiana or do you have to go out of state?

Alvin the first pic with the dogs against the fence far left Creek? Second from the left the chopper female? Far right the greyboy ? Second from right the Sam ?

Post by: oconee on March 22, 2014, 06:37:34 am
Dang Nathan, that's pretty good for having never actually seen any of them.   LOL   That male out of Chopper is actually hidden behind the group of dogs on the right but I took several pics and couldn't get one that was good of every dog, every pic had a dog or two hidden.   Them two out of Chopper are some of the best looking pups I have.  I my opinion they both look and act exactly like Plotts should!!!!!

Them two Gosnell gyps kinda messed my black brindle scheme up!!!   LOL

Hey Pwilson_10 have you or any buddy on this post had an all out gritty as they come silent plott?!? Just wondering. A buddy of mine had a plott cur cross and man I enjoyed hunting with him because he was silent unless he was looking at him and if it broke he'd shut it down ASAP and went to bawlin. That joker was a good long range dog. Maybe something to look for in the future.

That is some fine brindle power shown on here.
Alvin, you have some beautiful country to hunt in. I would not know how to  hunt in that wide open country. If you came with me to Ga., You would really appreciate what you have. There it is walking bent over, wading, or chopping your way into a tree.
Sherry does have the knack for taking great pics.

We have our share of "hell-holes" too, Mike.  Although probably not as bad as that mess you guys bear hunt in out east, our clear cuts full of black berry vines and green briars will slow the walk down quite a bit, if you know what I mean.  The logging company is not aloud to cut within 100 yds of the creeks banks for erosion purposes and its the only place with hardwoods big enough to climb and that's why all my pics look like I'm treeing bears in a park.  In most cases hell is just out of camera shot.  LOL I like this thread and your are right there are several nice looking Plott hounds on it and more to come, I hope.

Their are some guys holding pictures out on us!!!  LOL

Thank you Joe!   I like the dogs on the tree to but like Mike my favorite picture is the bear in the cave.  I had to jump down probably about 6 ft and stand on a ledge to take the picture.   The ledge was just big enough for me to put one foot on either side and  the only way out for the bear would have been to walk right underneath me.  No sooner had I got down there the bear decided he had enough of the dogs and stood straight up on his back feet, gave out a big growl,  took about 2 steps toward the dogs and grabbed one of them.  The roar of the other dogs was almost deafening inside that cave as they piled on the bear and he quickly let the other dog go.  I snapped this shot as they were backing him back up.   The metal plate on the dogs collar was pinched where the bear bit him.  Alvin is not always happy with me and my desire to get close to the action with my camera.  We bayed this big red bear the day before the one in the cave and he was the most beautiful bear I have ever seen.  He is also the largest I have ever seen.  I don't know that he could of climbed but they bayed him up several times.  One of the last times he was in a bad thicket and you could hear him in there popping his jaws and rushing at the dogs.  I was on my hands and knees trying to crawl in there and Alvin drug me back out.  This was the first bear my dog Si had ever seen.  He was 9 months old at the time, he is in the picture on the far left side.  He was one of the last 2 dogs Alvin caught off of the bear that day.  The next bear he was on he was the very last dog caught off and he hasn't looked back since.

Cajun, I don't think our thickets are nearly the mess you guys have but ours have stickers in them lol!  There is some rough country there and a big reason you don't see a lot of pictures of those places is because I do most of the picture taking and I can't go to those trees.  Our kids are usually with us and it's to rough for our little girl to go into those and I have a knee that keeps me out of a lot of places to.
Hopefully Alvin will come home with some good pictures from WI.
Sherry

Good pictures! The stuff we always bay or tree in is to thick to get good pictures an we got to watch the bear cause most of the time we are crawling in on our hands an knees the stuffs so thick...The places we can walk to em is thick reed patches cant see 5 foot in front of you in them lol

Sherry, You really do have the gift of being a great photographer. Most of our thickets have thorns or stickers on them too. I really dont think you can go anywhere in the south without having some rough country somewhere. One thing for sure, whether it is hogs or bear, they will sure take you to the roughest place around.
Bigame Joe, You are being promoted to be our official photographer. Now if we can just get Andy to slow down so we all get to the tree together, it is a done deal.
NChoghunter, how are your dogs bred?

Taylor Crockett himself. I have spent the night at his house several times when I was passing thru N. C. Him and Archie Boone came and made a hunt with me. I have had varying results with his dogs but one of them was a very good dog.
Taylor was the last of the Big Five and a icon for the Plott breed.

I got the pictures from John Jackson when I was up visiting him. The Big Red dog was Taylors all time favorite. John said my Bo dog, which is a Florida Cur looked just like him, and I have to agree!!

Red was out of a Vaughn Plott dog named Balsom Rock and Crocketts female June. Reds sire was suppose to be Plotts Happy, but Vaughn switched sires on him!

Boss is out of Leo and June as was Rusty.

You won't see me with a dead hog very often but a good friend of mine from Wisconsin wanted to kill a Trophy Quality boar for his Trophy room so me and my poop-eaters obliged him.   This hog was less than seconds from being stretched when he put the 357 to his head and shot him with three plotts hanging all over him.  I feel VERY confident we could have tied him down if that would have been our intentions but anyway he has a nice one for the freezer and the wall and I thought I would share.

The female on the left is Bluff Creek bred from Steve Herd in Protection, Ks, the female in the middle is off Jerry Gosnell's dogs in N. Carolina, and the male I'm holding is a coon bred hound out of GrNite dog in Oklahoma the goes back to Garrison Brindle Ranger and Buckeye Bud.

This is Blood River Deacon, got him from Cajun as a 7 week old pup. He has been running since 5 months old and running and baying by himself since 10 months old. I like him just fine.(http://i737.photobucket.com/albums/xx14/MikeS1956/101_1049_zps46f348c4.jpg) (http://s737.photobucket.com/user/MikeS1956/media/101_1049_zps46f348c4.jpg.html)(http://i737.photobucket.com/albums/xx14/MikeS1956/101_1057_zps86ce6cb3.jpg) (http://s737.photobucket.com/user/MikeS1956/media/101_1057_zps86ce6cb3.jpg.html)(http://i737.photobucket.com/albums/xx14/MikeS1956/101_1062_zps1086b463.jpg) (http://s737.photobucket.com/user/MikeS1956/media/101_1062_zps1086b463.jpg.html)

Reuben, I don't think that you could go wrong with Mike Cauley's line of Plotts. I'm not saying every pup makes the grade, everybody has a cull sometimes,if they say every pup makes it they are lying to you. I ran hog bred Mt Curs for years, and caught a lot of hogs with them, but the real running hogs always seemed to get away. I'm not saying you will catch every runner every time, but with good bred Plotts, your odds of catching those runners will go up if they have been bred with what I call (bottom) the ability and drive to stick to a track untill you have run the air out of those sho nuff runners. Mike's Plotts are very gritty dogs, very seldom does he even use his catch dog. Just yesterday we caught a 250# Wooley Bugger with 4 Plotts. I know I sound like a salesman for Mike, but it is only because I am sold on them myself. And CSCOTT, good luck on finding that silent one, not that there aren't any out there, but they are few and far in between.  I don't know of any man that has a line of them, but some breeders occasionaly have one. I really don't think it matters any way, whether a dog is open or not. It's just a mans personal preference. Personally I love to hear a good race. To me the only drawback to having Plotts is you can't turn out on 3 or 4 hundred acres, but with trying to catch these runners of today, they won't stay on it anyway. Good luck to everyone in our endeavors to catch hogs with what ever breed you choose.  I just choose Plotts.

I think your right it doesn't matter if there open or not bc if the dog can ether get the job done or they can't. But the few times I hunted behind an open dog it seam to me we alway had long races them normal and that just have been me thinking it bc I like silent dog idk. I have a buddy that a silent gyp she was a great dog wish I had her

I have three of mikes dogs that I run with thom franklin blood and dogs I got from mr Roberts. Mike and thins dogs run to catch have the speed and grit to shut the runners down, mr Roberts dogs have super cold noses and bay loose. I have friends with good curs and Catahulas but they always csll me when they say they get out run or can't stop them. I like a gritty dog and mikes are a-1 in my book. Give him a call he is a great guy, I called and talked with him as he was getting out of the marsh yesterday lol.

Trailed out about 450 yds barked three or four times.  Moved to 500 yds, barked three or four more times and caught on the ear.  No bulldog required.

This is a very nice 2 yr old female I have been hunting this winter.   She has bayed tons of hogs, needs no help and one of the best and most honest rig dogs I have ever hunted.

I haven't had hand on too many hogs. Probably never payed much attention to this in the past but whats up with the tail on that hog? Looks like it came from a Labrador. Do many hogs have tails like this or is it just the picture? Thx

I have no ideal what causes the tails like that but I think it cool.   LOL    I do notice the tails like that are more prevalent in the Russian influence types of hogs like the one in the picture.

I owned the father to them pups.   He was a Star Mt.  bred plott that was a good rig dog and rough as a cobb.   I can see why they are all dead.   LOL   He came from California and I actually didn't even run plotts back then but I liked him when I had him.

Mike...some of the things I like about your plotts...leggy, well built, slightly widers head and ears not too long...more of that cur dog look...and from what I hear plenty of grit...if all goes right I will be talking to you about a possible breeding to one of your males as we talked before...
