Title: What kind of work do y'all do ?
Post by: Georgia-Hawgs on April 02, 2015, 02:28:35 pm
Dont know if this has been posted before. But what does everybody do for a living? Im just curious. I do just about any kind of construction i can get my hands on. But i do mostly paint and sheetrock work. I use to be part of a television show called elbow room on hgtv. That was cool but didnt last long. I worked for a company called premier homes and contracting and they quit the tv show. I liked it though..lol..

Very nice work Judge.

I am one of those good for nothing, don't ever pay for anything insurance adjuster.  Was in the textile business for several years until they sent it all to Mexico, then roofing, then ran a body shop and then in the adjusting for the last 15yrs or so.  Been good but lots of ups and downs cause I am self employed.

Props to ya' judge for still being able to make a living and not charging astronomical rates...material pricing is making it more and more difficult to keep quality craftsmanship and material up without breaking the customers bank. At least that is what a buddy of mine that is in the same business tells me his challenges are these days.

It's very hard to be competive in the trades now days. Even worse for the no lic trades our friends from cross the border have drove the labor price down so bad they can't even make money half the time while the builder make more and more money. Most houses are not being built as well as they should be due  to high profits and cheap labor and cheap materials. I don't drop my price for any one it is what is but I tell my customers this I always answer my phone and pay me when your happy I mess jobs over price all the time but those are the jobs you didn't want any way lol

process operator. We take the air straight from the atmosphere and separate it. Gaseous oxygen and nitrogen goes in the pipeline for refineries and such. Liquid oxygen and nitrogen goes at holding tanks for trucks to pick up. We also have a 38 MW gas turbine generator with a HRSG. We use the power for the plant and send the steam to a refinery next door for their boilers.

as a kid I was babysitted in the cotton field under the trailer because the babysitter was too young to stay at home...wasn't long I was working for free for my dad...farming and ranching but best of all running dogs most every day to satisfy my ADHD...  ;D then I was in process operations for 32 years and retired...the best part of my job was making improvements that weren't in the books...after retirement I laid off a little while and realized I like working more than not working...so back to work in Safety, permit writing and now as a Planner for Turnarounds at the big plant...had to go through a big learning curve using power point, acrobat, and other programs in the computer...the real work is easy...but I am kind of challenged when it comes to modern technology... ??? :D it is true...it is harder for old dogs to learn new tricks...but I have been blessed...all the engineers I worked with before retirement are now the big dogs at the big plant and they were always calling be to go back and I eventually did...and so I consider myself very lucky to have them calling...I reckon I had them fooled all them years...  :-[ I probably will work till I am 70 years old if the good lord allows me to do so...

Good looking work there judge fine craftsmanship out of quality material. It's pretty interesting to hearall the different kinda folks who all have a common interest. I started out building houses then started doing tree Work been climbing for 15yrs and 6 yrs ago I started water logging salvaging old growth cypress and pine from the rivers and lakes around Florida. It's more of a really expensive hobby but the hunt and reward are quite addictive. It's some beautiful material.

They did what they did that was their choice. I did what I had to. I see it like this. God has a plan for us all. His plan may not match our plan. If he lays the path before me I follow it. I have made it this far like that I will make it to the end as well. We have food, shelter and smile and laugh daily. What else can u ask for . The rest will fall in place in time. Each step of my life has ended in a step forward. May have had to step back or side step a few times but still moving forward. :)

Have you used one of the smokers yet? There is a manufacturing business up here near Portland where I work and our company buys them smokers for us field mechs. I have yet to use ours since we have not yet gone to the field (hopefully 1 May we will be away from the hanger on our fire contract) so I don't know much on them other than they are a fuel pellet style smoker, and from some of the guys I work with that have their own, it smokes a mean brisket, chicken, salmon and pork roast. I just can't get past the price of them for wht they are, an electric smoker. What happens when the power is out? That's why I stick with my old fashion wood burning smoker/grill. Last summer our a/c went out and it was 98-102F in my house, so I cooked on the grill 10 out of the 12 days our a/c was out

I've had a Traeger for a few yrs and really like it. It is kinda cheatin the smoking but I use it for everything. Never had the power out for more than a few hrs. It does a good job. I just added some metal to my hopper to make it bigger for when I do pork butt overnite.

U can soop up the treager also. We have one that burns hotter we cook on at the store. Makes a mean steak. One of our salesmen has been using his for over 10 years on a regular basis. Very nice smoker but verry expensive  as well. It is funny to watch folks flock in for pellets prior to an ice storm because they plan to use the smoker if power goes out. Lol

3rd party NDE technician for 7yrs in refineries and chemical plants. I work for JV industrial currently (3.5yrs) as either the onsite QC manager or as a piping superintendent, whichever is needed on a project by project basis. I enjoy the QC more as I have a strong inspection background and it comes easy to me but running as a piping superintendent has its perks aside from feeling like a babysitter to welders and fitters occasionally  rolleyes ;D.............. pretty much my job consists of making sure that my employees have everything needed to complete a job in a safe timely manner, I handle ordering of ALL materials from grinding disks to welding machines and all other necessary equipment........ I can't complain though, I'll never get rich doing it but I make enough to support myself my other 1/2 and the little one and still have enough left over to afford the occasional toy here and there.

I am the sr blaster for an explosive company. I do mostly production shots in rock quarries but will do some construction blasting. I also run a ranch as the hunting manager and outfit hunts on a few other places for whitetail and exotics.

Fire Department for about another year and a half, then I'm retiring out after 34 years. Now maybe I'll get to do some hunting.

My pleasure, getting up to work and raising a family traveling around the nation with the wife in the military took me completely out of the hog and dog action.  Except when we get back to Hawaii to visit, with some luck and God willing, I'll be able to contribute to the posting with successful reports in a couple years.

Worked in the thoroughbred industry for years, now I just work some thoroughbred sales, build stuff with horseshoes and wood. I also clean at a slaughter house  and have have some healthy slightly overweight dogs but feed 13 dogs for free. Best part

I glue the cotton on the stick at the q tip factory.

I sell agronomy inputs and diagnose injured crops, and work directly with fruit and vegetable growers to help them reach a year end yield goal. Kinda burns up most of the year but I get plenty of time in the winter to hunt.

But as far as the job goes, I'm that guy farmers don't like seeing called into their farms, because if I have to go there, that means something is wrong with their crop. It definitely has it's ups when I can figure out what's wrong and fix it, but it also isn't a good feeling when you have to tell a grower his crop isn't going to make it. This is mostly at fruit and vegetable growers, as our growing season is too short to replant and start over.

The better the farmers know u the better ur chances. Reputation is everything. The better ur thought of in the area the better off u are. Knowing mutual friends helps also. They can get a line on u from someone else. If u can get one farm u can pick up the next.

Probably could hunt a lot of ground if I would ask. We own quite a bit of ground and there is tons upon tons of state ground around to hunt, so those are the majority of the places I hunt.

I just took over as ranch manager for a Beefmaster outfit and I'm moving to the ranch so I've been knocking on doors and introducing myself and have already gained more land to hunt, over the years by word of mouth your dogs will get you more places to hunt, it's taken me time but being in the agriculture business has gotten me more land than I can hunt now

I'm in Information Technology... If it has to deal with a computer or server I'm working on it. I work for a DoD company called L3 Communications. Been working on computers now for about 5 years in the corporate world, but about 10 in total. I do side jobs fixing computers that have viruses and other problems, I also design websites when asked and paid to do so. ;D other than that, I work on my house, my kennels and help my buddies with theirs.  I like to think of myself as a jack of all trades master at none really... ;D but seriously, Over the course of my 16yr working career I've done dishwashing, McDonald's, pipe fencing, helped buddies with plumbing, little bit of construction, customer service and warehouse management, land management, and now the computers and customer support. Only thing I think I'm pretty good at is dealing with people... I get along with most anyone and know how to talk and relate to pretty much anyone. Has its ups and downs, but pays decent and where I'm working now is paying for me to finish my degree.

How often do you see stuff like that at work he flew through our compressor station about 10 ft off the ground. Crop dusters are a little off.
