Title: New gyp
Post by: Slim9797 on July 14, 2015, 08:12:23 am
Got a call last week from my uncle, told me one of the 2 sister pups he was raising just wasn't going to make a dog for him. He said the dog Is far from junk, she's out of a 20+ year old bloodline out of Elgin tx. He just has lost his patience over the years and made a few mistakes being too stern with the dog. Anyway, he had her working cows, she's got one hell of a sniffer and my uncle agreed to help me turn her on to hogs (I'd put money on the dogs he's raised over any set this side of the Mississippi) and get her to where she might possibly grow up to be the best dog I own. She's about 10 months old. Half Catahoula half Black mouth. Y'all like her?

Appreciate it. Gonna show her her first hog this weekend. Plan on putting her in the pen with my best dog and hopefully she does a little something I can brag about.

Finally got around to showing her a hog. She just turned a year old. Put her in the pen with another pup of mine(was under the impression this pup was a lot better off than she is) anyway they get in there with this about 40 lb sow and I'm in the pen and I get the hog going and they bark a couple times and then run right back to the corner where they got dropped in at and wanted out. Well that hog caught both of them In that corner and gave them a proper ass whooping. Now I don't know what to do cause the one dog I have that I'd like to get her in a pen with is out due to pups and I have another finished dog but she's rough real rough on a hog and I don't want either of these too dogs to ever catch. I want them to be baying after the catch dog gets there. I'm hoping they just have to much puppy in them still and will come around soon. They both still act like spotted ass apes so I guess we will see. But so far no good

Who is your uncle?? I'm from elgin. We'll could have staked a hog out I (just my opinion) have had better success with starting a young dog out in the open. I never beat up a pup in a pin. I try let my pups feel confident, feel a escape route not be pinned up with a hog. Some people are different. Again(my opinion here) but I drove a T post in the ground and have a 20ft rope on it. It's able to reach tank water by about 4ft in. I usually tie a hog up to it and let my pups I've started in the past work the hog that way. Never corned them. I left enough room for the hog to reach water so the pups go in a little and bay as we'll. as to if you bay in a creek one day. Good luck with your pup. Build his confidence back up..

No problem. And I haven't really thought about staking a pig out like that. My buddy whose been around this sport a lot longer than I have made the comment about this pup might just be a real loose baying dog. Which I won't mind at all. I actually have a 30ft lead from an old dog run I could use. Do you just tie it on a back leg above the hock?

Well still loose baying or not don't corner the dog I'd think especially if it got whooped up a little. Yah I use mule tape on back leg wrap it it with electrical or duck tape so doesnt slip off. I'd probably use another looser baying dog that won't catch a smaller hog and intruduce this brindle dog in. Rough or loose dog, I'll never put one in a tiny pin and let a hog have at it. Catch dog, different story. (Just my opinion here)

My uncle is not from Elgin. The man who breeds this family of dogs is. I have no earthly idea what his name is. All I know is she comes from a line of stock bred cowdogs half Catahoula half black mouth cur. I got this dog on very short notice. Uncle gave me the quick short and sweet rundown and I took her home. He still has her full sister and she's making a pretty good cowdog for him.

https://vimeo.com/139818723 (https://vimeo.com/139818723) she at first didn't want anything to do with it. But she hung around with my older dog baying it and that hog charged the fence in her direction and she got a little fired up. Glad to see her baying
