Title: Spring 2017 prospects
Post by: justincorbell on May 28, 2016, 12:28:34 pm
Moved my last 2 youngsters to chains and picked up a few more prospects for next year. I have a couple more to get and a litter on the way but i like having options. These 4 all go back to the same blood ive been using for quite a while now. The 2 light yellas are both neices to my old smoke dog, their daddy was smokes litter mate brother, he is these pups daddy and their grandpa on the mommas side. They are both 1st cousins to my slick dog. The 2 darker pups are also out of the same line just a bit further out, they are my old smoke dogs second cousins and his great nephews if that makes sense

Thanks Terry, I appreciate it.

Cajun,
smoke was just an old school stock bred south east Texas cur dog. The man I got him from has been breeding, raising and using these dogs on hogs and cattle for over 30yrs. I couldn't really describe smoke simply as a medium or long ranged dog as it honestly wouldn't do him justice. He would go just far enough to find one, sometimes a couple hundred yards and sometimes miles, he would check in here and there but he was a real independent dog that didnt care if he had another dog around or not, he would leave out for a hour + 90% of the time, sometimes he would never get out past 1000yds in that hour and others he would leave town but he wasn't ever a road runner, he would hit a big block of woods and work it over before rolling on. Smoke was honestly just one of those dogs that seemed to get it in the woods, he knew exactly what he was there to do and was pretty dang good at doing it. I wont claim him to be the best but he was the best i've had the pleasure of owning and hunting behind.I lost him early last year at over 13yrs old not 5 minutes before he gave out he bayed and helped catch a big sow in a thicket, I believe his heart simply gave out on him.

I have a son to him that is well on his way to passing his old man up, I wont brag on him too much but I will say that he is dang sure filling smokes shoes and really impressed me this year. He has found his fair share of hogs for us and has managed to stay relatively healthy and uninjured doing it.

I just showed this group of pups their first pig a few days ago. I ended up giving one of the light yellow females to a friend to raise and hunt and picked up two brindle pups from the psenciks. I was happy with what I saw.....i will show em another in a couple weeks then leave them be for a while.

Sent the dark brindle gyp to alabama and the other little solid yella gyp to a buddy down the road, all of these pups except 1 have shown great progression since ive started working them i simply dont have the room to keep em all. Im planning to start the red brindle and yella male pup this spring...... bout time for em to move from the puppy yard to chains. I made a repeat breeding with my slick and jane dogs and she should domino within the month. Her pups from last year have shown me everything i needed to see to go ahead with the repeat breeding. I sent one of them to alabama as well, there is no doubt in my mind that the young male i kept will perform this spring, he is quite the specimen.
