Title: Getting wrecked
Post by: Rough curs on November 06, 2017, 01:49:40 pm
Anybody hunt with friend ,splitting up dogs, like 3 of mine 3 of his?. Anyways did it a month ago and boar hog wrecked 5 dogs and took 2 40 cal slugs to face....and ran off. Well went out yesterday eve and found him,had him caught with all 5 of mine ,iwas by myself. Took about 30 seconds to get him caught and took me about as long to leg him kept spinning and spinning. Anyhow after I got him killed and found the bullet holes in his face ,I just count believe it was same 1,but the bullets don't lie. About 220 # 1 cutter broke at the gums and the other was about 2 " and the tip busted off. Anyways I'm never gonna leave dogs at home again ...think they trust and work better together..

I run with other guys all the time. Only take a couple of my dogs when I do. I don't run rough dogs though.

Sounds like you ran into a rank SOB that would have tested most packs of dogs.

I agree that most dogs are more confident and take more risks when they know the dogs with them will back them up. I have one dog that catches like a bulldog with our dogs and bays soft hogs he normally catches when I hunt him with strange dogs.

I think the key to mixing packs is to make sure you are running same type of dogs meaning rough or loose. If you mix that up the wrong way then you playing with fire.

(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20171107/bac094d6bc66a933653b4837b4139f81.jpg) this is my old Kate dog. She was all but guaranteed to get wrecked by a boar hog if he had teeth. If she got bayed solo, you better catch everything else before they make it to her. If she goes to another dogs bay which she rarely did. She was going as a bulldog. She was a bay dog but as rough of one as I've ever seen. She could sure get one stopped though, just didn't mix well with other dogs. A pup or 2 maybe but that's it.

I could take her solo and bay and shoot and kill the baddest hogs around and never get her more than scratched. Use a bulldog or throw a some other curs out with her and she'd go to catching hogs she had no business catching

4 of mine will try to catch anything by themselves one of em is smart about it the other 3 not so much but together all 5 I think wouldn't quit. But I have not caught those huge hogs I see you all catching . Mine seem to be small and pissed off all the time. Like I said though it's my dogs or yours  I don't think I'll be mixing em up  or leaving any at home.

I take the same amount if I am with some one or not I take what I know will work. Rough and loose are ok together if the rough are really rough and catch out if they nick and nack the hog then your going to have a problem almost any dog with a touch of Gritt will take holt if another dog does just needs to hold and not let go. There are some dogs that will bay if alone but will catch if any other dog shows up. And some will never catch. The dogs that tend to get cut up all the time usely are fighting the hog not catching or baying. That makes runners and cut dogs

A good dog will do it whatever the conditions but I absolutely agree dogs perform way better than with strange dogs....

stick with good loose dogs, mine always hunt with other dogs, i can guarantee loose stop as many as gritty as long as your comparing equal quality..

I like to hunt similar style dogs together... seems like every time you run a mixed pack it turns into a big cluster doodle.

Around hear if a dog stinks to much or even barks once the race is on ...not all neighbors like it either. My 5 hunt together stay together and usually catch together. This 1  ti me I brought my buddy and 3 of his and left 2 of mine at home....bad decision I guess. Anyways loose bay won't cut it unless they have enough balls to stop em when they run.

Since that wreck my male who had  been busted up pretty bad, I can't put weight on him. Any suggestions? Amoxicillin ,wormed ,double fed now with the cold. Not sure maybee some bulldogs could help ,he pulls more that way then the curside.

Mixed packs are asking for trouble big trouble.  The ruff dogs are depending and looking for their help and its not there like it is most the time when you hunt your usual pack . Most the time a pack of ruff dogs all have a roll to play if hunted together enuff and if your missing one are two the other dogs are in the danger zone.  The loose dogs are put into the danger zone because they are out of area of expertise which is staying back baying and not pressuring the hog and find themselves on top of the hog trying to help the ruffer type dogs .  Its a no win mixing packs .

I have had good luck running mixed dogs two or three dogs rough or loose together should do the trick. But it ain't for everyone I think the trick is the rough ones have to really be super rough and catch not nip and tuck or fighting the hog which can be the biggest problem.

All i hunt are catch dogs but my type catch dogs are vastly different than most peoples.        I hunt them 2 at a time.    Not to often does one ever get hurt.    In the past 5 to 600 pigs since changing to this style of hunting CD I've only had 1 injury serious enough to make a trip to the vet.    Excluding a trip once to get a thorn impaled deeply in the eye removed.
