Title: ***Rust control***
Post by: TFree80 on September 13, 2018, 07:33:37 am
What are you guys putting on your kennels to control rust espically around the lower areas where they pee? I've heard those  spray on bed liners work good anyone have any luck using that?

Let me know when you find out lol, I’ve tried everything from galvanized paint to rubber in a can, in 5 years time I had some drill stem rot out where it got peed on everyday...

The bottom 1 foot made from stainless material. I think 304 stainless is better corrosion resistant properties thanother stainless.

That type was recommended to me for lining my conex so i can use it as a lumber kiln which resists against tanic acid emitted from the wood as it dries.

We paint galvanized pipe with Coal Tar Epoxy for use in near saltwater. If the pipe is not galvanized on the inside also, it will rot from the inside out.

I built my current set out of sucker rod. 3 years in so far so good but I’m sure they’ll eventually
rust out.

We spray some sort of acid on all our creep feeders and stuff at the ranch. Idk what it’s called but it kills the rust. Ospho or something maybe?

I'm in need of repairing kennels now due to the male dogs peeing on them. I've been kicking around the idea of raising my kennels the height of two or three cinder blocks.....Does any one know any cons about  using cinder blocks?

Next set of kennels I build I will have cinder block kennel dividers 36” inches or so, I helped  a friend of mine build his like this and they are nice, won’t have to worry about dogs fighting through the panels and tearing each other up and won’t have to worry about the metal rusting out, he paints his every year just to freshen up the seal on the brick, I’ve had just as many injuries with dogs fighting through the wire than I’ve had get banged up bad by a hog...

Goose, what did he use for the ends and the tops?  I have had the fighting issue also...I have one set of kennels with 4"x 4" wire that i had to hang sheets of metal between each kennel and of course the its rusting now. But the other set of kennels has 2"x 4" wire and they can't seem to get their muzzle through that.

The ends we just butted to the front and back post of the pens in between kennels and we filled the blocks with concrete as we went and we just took a mortar trowel and smoothed the concrete on the tops...

They make caps for those blocks if you don't want to fill them but I don't know how sturdy they are to set kennels on. They nicest setup I ever saw was from a bricklayer who made his kennels that way. He had a gutter set up on the end and hosed everything between the walls.

Funny thing, my buddy I helped with his is a brick layer lol, the kennels aren’t sitting on the blocks , we poured a slab and left rebar sticking up where the holes of the bricks would fall out to give the concrete something to bond to while filling up the blocks...

I spoke to these guys at the SEMA show in Vegas a few years ago, might be something worth looking into

Anybody have any pics with them raised? I bet that would be a good idea to help control the lower areas where they pee
