Title: 3-1-20 hunt
Post by: justincorbell on March 01, 2020, 04:48:15 pm
Me and josh toted the kids today and had a blast. Bayed a big boar right off the bat, couldn't get closer then 500yds so I stayed with the kids, Josh walked in and video'd and called to tell me the deal, we decided to make his day and leave him in tact to spread those genes a bit longer so josh called the dogs off and we found another one a bit easier for the kids to get to. It was a spotted hog day today. Reading the Scene...

The boar hog is extremely careful not to make the wrong move...he knows if he makes a run for it he will get caught...he sees the only way out is to wait the dogs out and hopes they will go away by doing so...that is how he sees it and the dogs are reading the same thing...they see the hogs caution as weakness...

The big cur dog in the water is telling the hog...if you run we will catch you and the boar hog knows it and he also knows that the big cur dog the the water is the biggest threat...

Reuben, I’m not sure if you’re on Facebook but Justin’s buddy Josh posted the video that these screen shots are from... really nice dog work. Just enough pressure to keep him there but not too much to make him break. I’m accustomed to suicidal rough dogs that catch any and everything. It’s very rare to see dogs bay pigs around me. But I think that’s simply because people in my area don’t have skilled bay dogs. I’ve seen several dogs that wouldn’t put teeth on a pig that were very good at striking and running a track all day and night but they would never stop the pig and sit him down.

I like how Justin’s dogs will make it bay and then they’ll back up and will catch it, or come off of it depending on what they’re told to do. Makes me realize how much work I need to do with mine lol. None of my dogs are listening to a word I say once they’re focused on a pig. It sure would be nice to be able to call them off sometimes

Alot of time has gone into my mutts to get em that way buddy, you will get to the same point just stay the course! .........P.S. the Alpha when used correctly is the single best tool every made in my eyes regarding hog hunting with dogs. 2 of the dogs in that video had never been called off of a hog BUT due to having 2 experienced dogs there that know what to do when spoken to plus having the ability to tone the two young dogs made it easy enough for josh to call them all off. He never once had to shock either of them, talking to them plus the added tone getting their attention along with them seeing the older dogs call off when told was all that they needed to see/hear in order to understand what was being asked of them. I enjoy that aspect of this sport as much as any other, its hard to beat having a good handle on your dogs, just makes life much more enjoyable in the woods.

What would you do to start training dogs to do that when they don’t have another dog to follow? I’m about to start tone training, I did it with Dum Dum but he was the only one because the others won’t listen if i just cut em loose in the yard. I think I’m going to take them one by one to a fenced in dog park to work on it

If wait until I knew they had a strong understanding of exactly what the tone button means and what comes after it if they choose not to listen. I teach mine what it means after they've been on enough hogs to know their job in the woods but when they are still young and trashy by turning them loose after I've seen deer in the road ahead of me.....if they take the track off the road I tone and holler "get out" and "here" a few times, if they take the track much more than 30yds off the road I light their asses up. It rarely takes more than twice for them to learn what the tone sound means.

It sounds easy and really it can be but you can screw one up too if you are not consistent with them and confuse them.

And to go a little further with that, the tone or beep to a dog is just another word for them to learn, you cannot tone them and condition them to come to you and then try to tone em again and expect them to do anything different. Decide what you want that beep to mean and stick with it.
