Title: Rogue Boar Hunt 6/31/20
Post by: Cajun on June 02, 2020, 01:28:40 pm
This story starts a few weeks ago. My hogs in my  running pen were pushing out of my 25 acre running pen and I could not figure out why. My hot wire seemed to be working. Anyway they were coming and going to get the corn I was putting out for them. I got a new Hot wire box and waited until I knew they were in the pen because they would push the wire in the direction they were going.I turned the wire back on and had them back in. I had a 200# barr in there that I wanted out because he was to rough on pups so I set up a couple of buddies and Larry shot him when he went by. Pups went on and bayed the 100# barr I had in there. went in to make him break and one of the pups came to me and he had a couple of gashes in him. Told Larry and Mike that we needed to catch him and trim his tusks. Went and got Amber and my bulldog and Amber went and bayed him. Turned the bulldog loose and we heard him hit. Larry said that is not a  small hog and I agreed. Hog shook off the bulldog and I was able to catch him and Mike caught Amber. They were all cut up. Took them to the kennel and got them doctored up. We skinned and quartered the 200# barr that Larry shot and that afternoon when I went to dump the guts I noticed a really big set of tracks crossing the road going to the pen. When I git back, I went and walked the fence line. sure enough I saw where he had pushed out of the fence going thru the hot wire. These tracks were huge and I was thing it was the 300# barr We had cut the year before in that area. I put some corn out and he did not hit it for four days. Went and checked it Sat. and it was hit.
Larry, Mike the knife and I were out early Sunday morning at 6:00 and turned out Hank and Hillbilly. They covered that block and came out several times to the road. everywhere they came to the road there were hog tracks but they could not figure it out. After a hour and a half, I went and got Amber from the house. Cut up or not I needed her. Went back where we started and put her and Showtime out. They trailed out and split up and Showtime jumped the hog  at around the 270 yard mark. Thing was Hillbilly and Hank had made several loops right there but just could not find him.The race was on now and amber packed to him. This race left so fast that I thought it might be a deer but when we checked the road, they were right. They went thru the North boundry block, thru the Little creek block, into round Swamp, into the williams camp block and at the Grassy roads we were able to throw some young dogs into the race. Showtime was about 500-600 yards ahead of Amber and we caught her. The dogs were screaming and we saw the hog cross into the firetower block and they were only a hundred yards or so behind the hog. Talk about music, they were singing to him. They made some big loops in there and bayed about 270 yards away. We walked in and sent my bulldog and two of Larry's Dogos and he was caught. Got in there and tied him up and now were discussing what we were going to do with him.No way we could get out side x sides in there. He weighed 275# plus. Larry called the RBz boys to see if they had a 4 wheeler we could get to him with. Scotty and Rhett met us at the bikes about the same time we were bringing dogs out. Showtine was cut pretty bad in several places but the worse was in his flank and he was sucking some air. I was missing a young dog named Slim and when I checked the Garmin he was showing treed about a 100 yards past the hog and that was not a good sign. We went in and could only get the 4 wheeler about a 150 yards from the hog so we decided we would just Barr him and turn him loose. Problem was there were no trees to climb up, only pine saplings and other small trees. Since Rhett was the fastest of the bunch we elected him to turn the hog loose. Problem was he did not just run off but hung around a little leaving Rhett hanging in the tree. He finally took off and we walked out.
We walked in to Slim and he was dead. He took a shot straight into the chest and had bled out. Really hated that as he was a very promising 18 month old dog.
Thanks Scotty and Rhett for helping out. We owe you.
This hog ran a good 5 miles line of sight but that is not counting the loops he made. Somewhere around 6-7 miles. Hope he learned his lesson about breaking into my hog training pen.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200602/d137fee64d24ee98b8d435fa5db9dd81.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200602/71cc1cfbd9df787a0f1ff9a3a958dd5b.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200602/1d7faad06ced2a5b405100d86eff9fe0.jpg)
