A,man outside Seguin caught two mountain lions this year. A four year old tom and a young female. Said he's seen more cats in this area here recently than ever before. Might be one. You do any hunting around Seguin?

Neat picture and I'm just asking because I have never experienced any kind of Protection training but what purpose is that drill teaching the dog about protection? I get the decoy but what's with the two tie outs? is that a bungee cord on the bottom and if so, what's it teach? Sorry, not trying to sound like a smart ass, just don't understand what its teaching.

Once Again, not looking for the best dog you own or how well they hunt, but would like to see pics from what You all have found in the closest-to-perfect built dog.
8  HOG & DOGS / HOG DOGS / Structural desirables and defectives on: May 21, 2014, 01:26:09 pm
When picking through a litter or searching for a young dog to fill into your program, what are some of the key structural points of a dog that you look at first? What are some flaws that you're willing to look past, and most importantly what are the ones that you absolutely refuse to incorporate in your pack. I know that breeding for inherited hunting traits are always a big strive for dogmen but what about the structure of a dog? I guess one would first have to figure out what their idea of the perfect built dog would look like and then whittle towards that design until coming as close as possible. I've owned some structurally sound dogs with perfect conformation and eye appeal that were culls through and through and I know that looks don't hunt, but.... If I'm keeping a dog on my yard, on my dollars, it had better be physically impressive to me and have as few structural gaps as possible. Just wondering physically what some of you look for in a dog?

Just wondering, was this the same "bar" hog that was pictured under that feeder in your other post? If so, how much did she end up weighing?

If you search kennel project I'm sure you'll see some good ideas. Also search the classified ads. Seen lots of well built mobile kennels on there.

16  HOG & DOGS / GENERAL DISCUSSION / Re: Bundy ranch? on: May 07, 2014, 09:12:47 am
^^ that seems like a pretty open and shut case. He was Grazing cattle on land that didn't belong to him and didn't want to pay any fees. Doesn't matter who owned the land, be it private, state, or federally owned. It wasn't his, he got caught and then turned it into a big media deal and played the victim. The government didn't take his cattle from his land or take land from his ranch. The property was Federally owned, he knew that and felt it did not matter to him. Plenty of Ranchers graze stock on government land and pay fees every year to do so. He felt the laws did not apply to him and he was wrong.

18  HOG & DOGS / GENERAL DISCUSSION / Re: When your a THIEF!!!! on: May 06, 2014, 10:19:33 am
From what I read, sounds like you and your friend handled it as best possible. Lots of folks think about what they would do in a situation like this. When it's your property and basically a member of your family bottom line is get it back. You're dead on about how the main goal was getting your dogs back to you. Don't make a difference if you called the cops, FBI, or National Guard, you did what you could to get your dogs. Very Glad this situation ended up in yalls favor. To hell with what happens to the guy who took em. If he learned a lesson, great, if not someone down the road will probably teach him a little harder. I've had dogs stolen from me before as well, that bravado "go knock down the door" crap wouldn't have done a thing but got someone hurt and someone in jail. Again, Glad your dogs are back where they belong.
19  HOG & DOGS / GENERAL DISCUSSION / Re: Portable scale ideas on: May 02, 2014, 08:23:34 am
When we were in high school we used an old cotton scale. Could be carried around in the bag of the truck between the dog box and cab and fit inside a burlap sack. Was easy to hang from a tree and went up to 400 lbs. Was so old that we had to remark the lines with marker in order to read it. Will see if I can find it and post a pic.
20  HOG & DOGS / GENERAL DISCUSSION / Re: deadly swine virus outbreak on: April 29, 2014, 02:19:03 pm
Feral hogs may not have any more special immunity from it than any other animal but being outdoors in the wide open and being able to move around from one place to another, the rate of exposure is much less. There's many viruses and diseases that feral hogs carry but because they are not confined to one place and kept in close contact with each other, major outbreaks aren't as big a threat.
