Mine start on cows first then hogs!!I never show them a hog in a pen!!After working cows a few times with them then I just start takeing them hunting they just pick up and go!!
Ok so my question is how do they know to work cows or hunt pigs. All the places we hunt are on pasture land that cattle graze. We have to completely break our dogs off of cows cuz the land owners around here are real paticular about it and dont want the dogs messin with the cows. I hear about alot of dogs that do both how do you get them to do one or the other?

HOG & DOGS / DOGS ON HOGS / Awesome hunt with new buddies for there 1st time

I met a couple of new buddies and they have been wantin to go they have a pit and kinda wanted to see what its all about and maybe get some dogs for thereselves. So we went out saturday morning early and went down the ranch we hunt on to a salt cedar patch where we got a big boar 2 wks ago and ten min in there we had a bay. My new buddy Jace cut his pit loose and she went right to em and it broke and came closer to us and they had him caught. He had a real high squeel so i thought it was little. We were scramblin through the salt cedars and finally got to em and they had a 275 to 300 lb boar so ran in and legged him and they helped me get him flipped and the dogs off. There was six of us Me Cody and Logan but 3 of them, Matt J, Matt S, and Jace with his pit had never been on a hog in the woods they were pumped. We decided to stick him and drug him out to get pics So we moved over to another set of salt cedars and cut the dogs loose and switched catchdogs...20 to 30 min of walkin through our strike dog Red bayed and the rest of them went to him. We got pretty close and I cut Cinnamon loose and ran to the bay. They had this 300 lb sow caught (we weighed her on the gin scales) walked her out live and threw her in the trailer. Went to another set of cedars and didnt come up with anything. The newbies were just chompin at the bit to get on another one and i saved my honey hole to hit up last so we drove over there walked the dogs in and 10 min later they had a lil shoat. Stuck him and while we are sitting there talkin about it the dogs rolled out and were bayed again. So we took off runnin to em and cut both catch dogs loose about 100 yds away and they had this lil blonde boar caught. We started to keep him alive and drag him out but as we were hobbling him the dogs were bayed again. So we stuck him and took off runnin this time they were 500 yds away and while we were on our way there they broke and went 200 yds farther right to a creek by the road where Cody was waitin in the mule. We got there and me and Matt S hopped in the creek and stuck this sow and pulled the dogs and called it a day. Needless to say I got 3 new huntin buddies that are lookin for some dogs now...so if anyone has some young dogs for sale I know a few guys lookin. It was an awesome day of huntin.

After a few things were brought to his attention, the hogs must be gutted after they are killed. The winner will be decided by who has the most hogs then by weight for each team. This is his first contest and he said if anyone else has any other ideas or suggestions to let him know at check in and he will address all the teams about the changes there at Gander Mountain before the contest starts. Also there is no late fee...THE ENTRY FEE WILL BE $200 ON THE DAY OF CHECK IN.
Hope to see some of you fellow doggers there!
Thanks Trevor

Amen to that... and it applies to all hunting dogs..
As for CD's, I Never bought a catchdog in my life. You can get all the bulldog catch dog prospets you want free and just as many of them will make good one's as any you pay $$ for. Fact is most bulldogs will catch, you just may have to go through some and find those that suit ya. No offence to CD breeders tryin to sell CD prospects, but that's just a fact based on what I have experienced and know to be true. A good finished catch dog,, yea might be worth payin a man something for his time, feed and the proven ability of one in the woods, but remember what he is , what his job is and how things can happen in the blink of an eye with a catchdog doing his job. [/quote]
I agree with skoalbandit...we have never paid for a cd....we find them at the pound. We just make sure they dont have any human agression and then take them huntin and send them in with another cd and they catch on. Some of our best catch dogs were/are the gentlest playful dogs we have ever owned but when turned to a hog its all business. And to say that free dogs dont last as long, we havent ever lost a cd to a hog.
