HOG & DOGS / GENERAL DISCUSSION / Re: Son x mother

I was always told father to daughter and never son to mother. Since my best blood tracking dog (female) got cancer, i was told i should have her spayed. I bred her one last time and bred her back to her son. Well, all the pups I got came out deformed, mental or physical issues. Kicked myself in the ass!

I can tell you what I have seen when I have been around Roy's dogs. His dogs are bigger dogs and work slow and methodical, Have an excellent nose and brains. Can they be used as hog dogs, probably but don't know if those traits are what you look for in hog dogs. I think his dogs are bred for one discipline and that is blood tracking. Now crosses may be a bit more versatile. Jerryg

HOG & DOGS / GENERAL DISCUSSION / Re: Making Jerky

Just a quick tip, if you take it off the dehydrator and throw it right in the fridge in a zip lock bag it will "perspire" in the bag and absorb some of the moisture back in and wont be as tough. Also If you save some of the marinade throw a little of that in there too and shake it up it will absorb more flavor while its in the fridge. Gotta do it as soon as you pull it though.
Thanks, actually let it sit from 1 am to 6 am on the dehydrator. What is the proper way to let them cool?

I made some red deer jerky last night for the first time on the dehydrator. Marinate overnight. I left on the dehydrator 7 hrs then let it cool off before I put in ziplocks and in fridge. Kids grabbed a sack for school!

You need nose to smell, brains to associate the different scents and keep him going, drive to keep him on the track and not give up, genetics is very important, puts all these together. Dog that knows how to bay loose and hold a wounded deer is a lot better than one that gets rough and makes buck break.

I don't know what my mutts have or their percentage. One dog I had that was doing great had 1/4 hound. He was a catahoula x blood hound x lacy. Lost him a few years back

Don't add a hound, been there done that. The ones I worked seemed too hard headed to not stay on the blood or wounded deer as take the first hot track they crossed. Now, I have been working a Bavarian mountain hound an have been impressed.

Can it be done, I think it can but as coach said you have to spend a lot of time working the dog and forming that bond/trust. You always hear "the old timers did it", true, but this old timers relied in this dogs to live! I have both hog dogs and blood tracking dogs. My passion is finding wounded deer. My blood dogs are worth too much to put them on hogs so I keep them on one discipline. I prefer they excel at one disciplene. And as my dogs get older and the more tracks we work together you form that bond and trust in each other. Here are a few from this year...

Caught two in a hurry. Got one of my dogs poked so we went back to get him taken care of. Young dogs did great. My Noah dog was caught on the second hog, this was his second time on the ground and he stayed with the big dogs. Should make a good dog, very happy with him. Thanks Brent, like him very much!
