1  HOG & DOGS / GENERAL DISCUSSION / Re: Tilden on: June 20, 2017, 12:30:39 pm
I hunted a lot in Webb County to the west of Tilden.  that area is very rough.  hogs grow more teeth than body sometimes.  you need to watch out with them javelinas as well.  they'll kill dogs faster than a big boar.  also carry lots of water with you.  even at night in the summer, it will be almost 100 degrees right at dark.  them dogs need lots of water in that dry country. if you have dogs that can strike on a regular basis out in that brush country, they'll find pigs anywhere.

7  HOG & DOGS / HOG DOGS / Re: losing lead dog on: September 12, 2012, 12:04:49 pm
I too recently lost my #1 dog this summer. He got sick in feb and we kept hunting without him. Luckily for me I have 2 older dogs that work just not as far. We kept catching pigs. Luckily we got a few up and coming dogs who hopefully will step up and keep us catching pigs. They just need time on the ground and pigs in front if them.
8  HOG & DOGS / DOGS ON HOGS / Kamikaze Boar on: September 12, 2012, 11:47:02 am
Finally posting these pics. We caught this boar on the sun the 2nd. I had a long week. Really not in the mood to hunt. One of the guests wanted to go catch a pig. So we loaded up fat dogs and away we went. We had 2 ladies in the backseat and as we were driving to the spot we wanted to drop the dogs one lady said "there's one in the road". I never saw the hog until he was 20 yds in front of us in the headlights. He even walked closer to the truck. I bailed out the truck and turned the dogs loose. My old dog Rita ran up to it and sniffed it. Guess she was surprised the hog just stood there.  When the boar ran into the brush the dogs were on his butt. They had him bayed right inside the brush. You could see the lights off their tracking collars. We turned the catch dogs loose and ended up with this big boy.

210 pounds with 3 1/4" teeth.  Everyone was excited and no dogs were hurt. When we dragged him out jerryg pulled his bro-in-law into a cactus. Who needs enemies when you got family!  We took lots of pics. This was the dogs first outing since memorial day. Everyone wanted to continue but with no (fat) dogs hurt and a big boar on the truck I'm never greedy.
Now that hunting season is upon us and hopefully cooler weather down here in the desert it's time for us to whip them dogs back into shape and start catching pigs again.
Until next time....

10  HOG & DOGS / DOGS ON HOGS / Crazy yella dog finds another one on: May 26, 2012, 09:10:25 am
Yesterday the high was 110 in south Texas. We didnt collar dogs until after 9 pm. It was still over 90. Got dogs loaded, ice chests of cold drinks and the hunters. We got to the first spot which is a little water hole surrounded by thick brush. We dropped one rough older yella dog and some young dogs hoping if they find one they shut him down quick. Dogs ran to the tank and no sign. Picked up and went to a protein feeder the hogs had beee jacking with.  Dropped again. Jefe (crazy yella dog) took off and started making his loops. On the gps you could tell he was trying to work a track out. But prolly the heat and the wind that finally kicked up he was having a hard time working it out. One of the young dogs was doing the same as well. Finally caught jefe. Looked at gps and the young dog had backtracked the wrong way. After awhile we picked him up and loaded him up. Drove to the next spot. Kicked out the dogs again. The older dogs burned up the road. Went 300 yds and all turned right into the wind. Shortly after that jefe was bayed solid. When the rest of the dogs got there you heard squealing. We got wihinn 50 yds of the bay and This is what we ended up wih.

He wasn't a big hog but we'll take it. After that hog we hit two more spots with no luck. Since I'm gonna hunt again tonight we called it a night.
Another good fun night in south Texas!!  If we have any luck tonight I'll post it up.
11  HOG & DOGS / DOGS ON HOGS / Re: BIG boar from this past weekend. on: May 20, 2012, 09:02:10 pm
Very toofy!!!  Years ago when the new walmart in alice opened up we ran and caught a decent sow in the parking lot. The security guard gave us a ride back to the woods. Congrats again!
12  HOG & DOGS / DOGS ON HOGS / Re: YOUR FIRST HOG KILL on: May 08, 2012, 09:58:05 pm
My first hog hunt was the night of the first day of my first job out of college. My boss came over to the house I was staying in. He asked if I wanted to go hog hunting. I agreed and we went to his truck. We went to the kennels and pulled 7 big cur dogs out and loaded them into the truck. We drve the 22 miles to cedar bayou and crossed onto matagorda island. He is on the hog permit over there. We dropped the dogs and after a while heard the dogs barking. We drove to the bay and the dogs had a 100 lb sow caught. He handed me his knife and I stabbed her. I was so pumped I put a pinch of snuff ontop of my snuff.  After that night I went every chance I could.  10 years later Im still at it.

16  HOG & DOGS / DOGS ON HOGS / Re: Going desert dogging tonight!! on: May 05, 2012, 11:49:28 am
Got the dogs loaded up around 9. It was 93 degrees. The dogs didn't seem too excited.

Finally dropped the dogs around 10:20 at a tank with lots of sign. We dropped my old dog rita and 2 1 year old dogs. Left jefe in the box cause we were close to the corner of the ranch.  Few minutes later the dogs bayed up a group of hogs. They bayed for a bit then finally caught this sow out.
Corrupted another 13 year old boy!
We picked up and went to another spot and dropped all the dogs. Jefe and Rita hit the ground and hunted for a bit. After a few mins jefe threw his head up and cut to the right towards a tank. He started baying up in a creek. When the rest of the dogs got there the hog broke and was heading out. Jefe tried to keep up but during the bay got a cut on his hip. Nothing bad just another battle wound.
Went to one last spot. Dogs took a track for a bit. One of the young dogs Duke stayed out for awhile. I'm gonna say he was hunting but really think he was lost. Finally picked him up after 1 in the morning. We called it a night after that.
Gonna give it another try tonight. Hopefully have something to show later.

18  HOG & DOGS / GENERAL DISCUSSION / Re: whats the best catch dog on: May 04, 2012, 06:20:11 am
240 gr 44 mag  from a winchester. Don't eat much but shuts hogs down Grin. As long as you trust the dog and it gets it done who cares.

20  HOG & DOGS / DOGS ON HOGS / Re: Biggest boar yet!! on: May 02, 2012, 05:11:59 am
For where you hunt that is a monster hog! Congrats and it is addicting when your dogs can get it done. I still get that feeling when my dogs get it done. Hopefully it never grows old. Keep giving them swine hell!
