|
on: August 13, 2013, 05:53:40 pm
|
I have a 17 year old bay mare that does it all. She has been used for heading, heeling, pasture roping, driving cattle, sorting cattle, team penning, hog hunting and more. She is a great heel horse that will hit the corner and have you there everytime and is very solid and consistent on the head side. Very quite in the box and has never blown up. Level headed, great with kids, no bad habits, easy keeper, easy going, 100% sound. I have not been roping so she needs to go where she will be used. She will be the same if you rope daily, weekly, or even take off a couple months. Registered with doc bar on top. Please call for more info. Current coggins and papers in hand. Located in Conroe. $3500. 936-443-4567 tobyb2007@msn.com Pics were taken within the past couple of weeks.

Jimmy,
I bet you could hire on with my neighbors, Center Ranch, between Centerville and Crockett... Of course, after seeing the place you are at, I imagine your standards of a good job are pretty high....
I agree, Center Ranch is a very nice ranch. There is also Rattle Snake Ranch, Camp Cooley Ranch and several other decent size ranches in the area. I don't hear much about Camp Cooley these days... I used to buy a lot of hay from there in the early to mid 2000's. Camp Cooley sold out about 2 years ago. Pretty sure circle x land and cattle bought it.

HOG & DOGS / HOG DOGS / Lucky "A Christmas Miracle"
|
on: December 29, 2012, 12:17:53 pm
|
Well I haven't posted on here in a while but I still get on and nose around. I figured I had to share this though. Christmas morning during the wind storm a pine tree blew over into one of my dog pens and landed dead center on one of my dog houses with Lucky (formerly known as Junior) in it. After seeing the condition of the barrel I just knew that he was either dead or hurt beyond recovery. Well we decided to cut into the house to see how bad the situation was and found that he was unharmed. If he would have been laying any other way or his head was over about 3 inches he would be dead. He is my 10 month old catch dog prospect that probably weight 70-75 lbs, just to give you an idea of how crammed he was. This pic is of the house. He is in the right side of the barrel. This is after we started cuting into the barrel and you can see his back and the red is his collar. This is after we got him out.

SC- i would recommend angus or angus cross cows
Chris- This drought has been hell on just about everyone. Alot of people are selling out and almost everyone is cutting back. Navasota has been running about 3500 hd a sale compared to 2500 hd per sale last year. Almost all cows being brought in are going to slaughter (cows sold as stocker cows last year are now being sold as slaughter cows). That being said people are going to buy back when/if we ever get some rain and get grass again. Your philosophy makes sense but there is no telling. You have to figure on 50/50 split steers/heifers. Heifers automatically bring less than steers and heavy brahman bring less than heavy angus influence. I believe that you would have to keep the heifiers longer (like a yr or 15 mo) in order to get a premium for them and sell outright or at a special replacement sale(which will have higher fees). With the number of cattle that are being sold and there is still a shortage of beef I believe that the cost of slaughter calves will continue to rise or atleast stay high. On the other hand I agree with you that replacement females will be in high demand and people will be paying a high price for them. With all that being said I will continue breeding for terminal calves, keep my own replacements and buy other replacements as necessary.
Matt- pass the popcorn

HOG & DOGS / GENERAL DISCUSSION / Re: AI Bull question

How do those leased bulls no end up with Trich? Do they just give trich guard or something to keep them from getting it? Seems like it could be a bad deal waiting to happen.
If I had to guess I would say they just trich test bulls after use and if they test positive then the leasee buys the bull.

Silverton did a good job on numbers. $3000 will get you an extremely nice bull right now with $2500 getting you a really nice bull. Lets say you buy a $2500 dollar bull and base everything on 90% calf crop which means 13.5 calves per year so we will say 13. 1 year 2500/13=192 per calf salvage value (being very conservative) 1500lbs*.55=825 so 2500-825=1675/13=128 2 years 2500/26= 96 per calf 1675/26=64 3 years 2500/39=64 per calf 1675/39=43
These numbers don't account for feed, hay, vaccines, etc. but should give you a good idea. If you buy a young bull it shouldn't be a problem getting 3 years out of him. If you buy a bull look at epd's and base them off of the breed average. (in your case birth weight and weaning weight are most important) Sell everything that doesnt have a calf and replcace cause the ones that don't reproduce still eat. Leasing is also a good option for a small number of cows. Is there any particular reason you are calving in fall?

Couple questions then I'll give my opinion. When is your calving season gonna be. Are you gonna keep replacements or sell all calves. Are you just gonna sell calves at auction. How is your stocking rate. For the AI price you gave is that all the expenses included such as shots and yardage. Feel free to add any other info that you feel is relevant

HOG & DOGS / HOG DOGS / Re: Question on break sticks

Its all about having a handle and starting with a dog that has brains. The catch dogs we use walk beside the horses until the curs bay then go in for the catch. They don't necessarily wait for you to send them but can be called back if you want them to wait. Once the hog is flipped we say caught hog and one person can pull the dog off. We have never had a dog let go early because someone said caught hog on accident or he thought he heard the command and we have never had to use a break stick or cut a hogs ear off either. This is just what has worked for us. To each their own.

Good topic mike.1-shockin, beatin, or any other disipline when a dog trashes when they have no idea what they are gettin it for. 2- over workin young dogs to where they burn out. Excessive pen time, working too long in heat, etc. 3-not giving dogs enough exposure. I know this is hard to control but what gets me is when one person has 2 dogs same age and one is doing better so he only hauls that one when the other would possibly be the better dog with a little more time. There are plenty more but these three come to mind and happen quite often.
