I think that it would be a good asset to you if you had one of those dogs that would latch on to the rear or tail end of that hog... that way the hog would have sat down and probably would not have continued to push through the woods as far at the bay/catch. Also I would imagine that a lot of the meat is damaged due to the dogs biting and then letting go to get a new bite. If a catch dog takes a hold and latches on to the ear or head and doesn't let go, I recon that there would be less meat damaged vs all the nip-nip marks all along the body and front shoulder.

I generally carry a SP101 Ruger .357 Mag due to its small size and reliability as a revolver when hunting hogs with dogs. The intent of the handgun is a last resort if we can't tie or stick the hog once the dogs have it caught. I also like to carry a handgun just to be prepared for other incidents that may require it.
I also have a Springfield Arms XD45 Compact for concealed carry and self defense. I recently bought a Streamlight TLR-2 as an accessory for the handgun. I started to think a little about it and have decided to carry the 45 with the light/laser when I go hunting hogs with dogs at night.
The 45 is currently loaded with 230 grain Hydra-Shok JHP's. It is my understanding that these bullets are intended for self defense and they have a quick expansion rate and distribute maximum kinetic energy before exiting a human body. I'm afraid that these bullets would not be the best choice for stopping a hog in its tracks.  I would like a bullet that will penetrate deep into the chest of a boar hog or skull if needed.

I know all the stuff about shot placement is key and Blah,Blah,Blah.... I have killed hogs with a single shot of a .22 also, but I am looking for what y'all would shoot out of a .45 Auto at close range in the "less than perfect situations" which would stop a hog as quickly as possible.

Went to the local feed store today and bought a bottle of "Dominion Tree & Shrub" for $16. The owner of the store said that she has never sold a bottle of this stuff to anyone who actually intended on putting it on a tree or shrub!

Thanks for the pics, that was great. It is always great seeing the whole family getting involved. Our family has made homemade sausage all my life. One thing we do differently is cut the sausage (every 18-20 inches), then twist it in the middle and hang it over a broom stick and then  put it in a smoke house. I like the way that ya'll did this by just laying it all in the smoker.

Do ya'll put a little twist in the link when it is coming out of the stuffer or do you wait until you finish the whole gut lenght and then put the twist for each link.

With the cold weather upon us, what kind of preparations do ya'll make for your pack of dogs.

I put a little fresh hay in their barrel/house, put a heat lamp shining on the front of the barrel and give them warmed up food. I also try to block the wind during the winter by wrapping a tarp around the kennels on the North side.

What else works well, other than bringing them in the house?

I carry a 357 revolver and a 12 ga. with slugs when hunting with dogs. A .222 or a 30-06 when just gun hunting.

Please don't let my honest description scare you away, Willie is a good dog, I just want to give everyone the best description possible and answer any questions that I would have. He loves to hunt.

I have a male Pit Bull catch dog for sale. He is about 4 years old and healthy to the best of my knowledge. Unfortunately I have hunted very little in the last two years so he has not gotten a lot of experience. I can not claim him as a "finished catch dog" since we don't hunt much anymore and can't say he is not flawless. Generally he rides the back of the 4-wheeler and goes to the bay from there or is guided in on lead. The only fault that I can give him is that he hasn't made it to the bay every time. I honestly contribute this to lack of practice and exposure in the woods.  That is why I have lead him in a couple of times... but once he gets a little closer, then he takes off and gets in there. He doesn't catch exactly the same each time, but it has always been on the ear, snout or jaw.
He is about 60-70 lbs, has good teeth, and I have never witnessed any dog or human aggression with him. He tolerates a cut vest and collar well and will ride a 4-wheeler and load up when it is time. Generally he is broken off a hog with a bite stick.
I am reluctant to sell him, but I don't hunt a lot right now and can't justify my feed bills.
I feel that he will make a good catch dog with a little bit more experience and exposure. I would estimate that he has caught about 15 hogs in the woods.
