HOG & DOGS / GENERAL DISCUSSION / Re: Tools...Toys...or Recreational Pets?

They are tools when they establish themselves as productive dogs. When they are young i give them my upmost attencion. Every dog that i have ever had gets a chance more than most people would do. Try to bring out all the good things that they show.If they dont progress then i try to find a fitting place for them. Culled a bunch but found homes for a bunch to. I had a well bred mountain cur/birddog cross that was a excelant bred dog that never did anything outside the baypen. Thought about culling him for a long time. One saturday morning i was headed to the pen to do just that and my phone rang and one of my buds was looking for a dog for an elderly lady that had just lost her husband. I carried him over to her house and turned him loose in her 2 acre back yard and he treed a big fat squirrel. To this day she loves that dog to death. Became her lil bud and when he aint treeing squirrels he is laying right beside her or in her lap while she is petting him. In march and april is when i make my money with my dogs. Any other time they are recreation dogs. Pet them when they do good. Other than that when they establish themselves in my kennel they get put back in their pens as soon as i get home from the hunt. Check them real good for cuts and such but other than that they dont get petted or handled.

I agree with demondoggers. Sometimes the best way is to let her ass kicked a time or two when she wants to be possessive of her catch. In the other hand if she can go yonder, find hogs, stay bayed, catch when the bulldog gets there.....she is worth a grand all day long. I would pay the man.

HOG & DOGS / GENERAL DISCUSSION / Re: Hog Hunting Tenure (Whats your number)?

Started cat huntin in 1980 down in south texas with two of the best men that a young guy could ever meet. They not only taught me about dogs but about life in general. Hunted hard till my oldest son was born in 1987. Tried to stay with it but my second son was born in 1989 so had to slow down and ended up selling all my dogs. Started going hog hunting with my neighbor in 2001. Got my first real hog dog in 2002 so i guess about 11 years. Been raising my own bloodlines for 6 years now. Dont plan on stopping. Watching your young dogs growing up and doing good is like watching your kids grow up. Makes you proud.

OK, had to jump into this. Got my bud into this hog catchin deal a cpl years ago and like all newbies he thought every dog that was bred for catchin hogs or cows was a good prospect. He hunted with me a year or so a decided he wanted a dog of his own. Well i gave him a pretty decent well bred dog that a lot of people would have gave a lot of money for. Well he got that fever we all know and had to have another. So his nabors birddog jumps the fence and breeds his lil collie/heeler dog and 63 days later he got pups. He calls me and asked me what he should do. I said cull quick but no he dont. He talked about these damn stupid dogs for 6 months and how they did this and did that with the hot dog and the bay pen and mock hunts and all along i said whatever. Well let me tell you, these two lil fockers he kept that are 8 months old are some go yonder gamey dudes. They mite not live long but this guy put a lot of time and patience in and i tip my hat to him for this. He took a accidental breeding and gave it his all and i am very proud of him for doing this. Guess every once in a while it works out.

Ryan, let me rattle my brain a lil and shed some info on how Fred,Oscar, and Luna are bred. Jill's (their dam) daddy was a dog named Blue Duck that belonged to a guy by the name of Clay Hurst from Springer Ok. I dont know how he was bred but i was always told cat & something. I only got to hunt with Blue Duck a handful of times but he was just a great dog. The kind of dog that you only see every once in a while. Just a dog that everyone dreams of having one day. Jill's mom was a dog named Kate that belonged to Joe Day from Howe Tx. She was 1/2 Plott, 1/4 Cur, 1/4 Greyhound. I hunted with her for several years and she was also a pretty good dog. Now their daddy was a dog that i got from a dog trader from Paris Tx named Brother. I bought him for 500 dollars. He was a black & tan cat. First time we took him huntin we caught a pile of hogs. Well i thought that was a pretty good deal, hell he hunted good, bayed good, & caught when the bulldogs got there. The more i hunted him seemed like the worse he got. He started barking on track, trashing on deer & yotes. I couldnt break him so i quit huntin him. Had a friend just gettin started hog doggin & he took him and put him in the woods 4 to 5 times a week and made him a pretty decent dog. He got run over by a car in Oklahoma chasin a big boar hog across a hwy. Thats all i know about their pedigree. It was a accidental breeding between them and i gave Jimmy Creed 4 of those pups and kept 2. From what i was told by Jimmy that all 4 of his made good dogs and you got the only one left. I know Oscar and Luna are pretty good but not anywhere close to their momma & grandpa.Wish i would have kept the whole litter now. Them dogs are 5 years old now and Oscar gets better everytime we kick out. Hope this sheds a lil light on their pedigree.

HOG & DOGS / HOG DOGS / HOG DOG FRIENDLY VETS & GAME WARDENS

Just wanted to give a lil tip of my hat to Bryan County Animal Hospital in Durant Ok for all the hard work they did today to my huntin buddy's bulldog. We got on one of them bad boys last nite that had a pair of knifes stickin out of both sides of his mouth. I have only been hunting these hog dogs for about ten years now and i'v seen a few dogs get cut bad and few get killed but i aint never seen a mouth/jaw cut like this one. I consider myself a pretty good field medic but i got a lil scared with this one. This hog cut every dog we had on the ground and left out of the country. So we got all dogs caught except for one and started for the truck about a mile away. Well then here comes the game warden drivin down the road and stops to check us. This was the nicest game warden i have ever dealt with. He checked us out real good but we was legal and had permission where we was at. He also knew we was in a bind with these cut dogs and had to get going to the truck. We told him we was still missing a dog and if he found it to please call. Got almost to the truck and he called and said he had our dog. Hats off to Collin County Game Warden Josh Ross. Got home and doctored dogs for an hour and then loaded two dogs that i could not do anything with and headed to Durant. Good to know we still got some hog dog friendly vets and game wardens around.
