1  HOG & DOGS / GENERAL DISCUSSION / Re: hogs turning feral on: September 13, 2013, 09:59:02 pm
Genotype vs. phenotype.

Genotype is the genetic make up of the animal.

Phenotype is determined by how the environment affects the animal.

Jagdtank gives a perfect example of this. The litter of pigs all had practically the same genes thus genotypically they are the same, but since they were raised in different environments they were phenotypically different.

For a population to develop "new" genetics without selective breeding takes many (possibly 100's) generations, but for a phenotypical change may only take one generation.
2  HOG & DOGS / GENERAL DISCUSSION / Re: Tips for cooking a hog in the ground on: July 17, 2013, 09:32:31 am
We have cooked one in the ground for the last 2 years for the 4th of July. We skin the hog, put whatever kind of rub you want, put vegetables inside like carrots and potatoes, then wrap in three or four layers of aluminum foil and wrap in aluminum fence wire to hold everything together.

Our hole is about four feet deep, five feet long, and three feet wide. It will take 6 to 12 hours to burn enough wood. You want around 10+ inches of hot coals in the bottom of the pit before placing your pig in it

We made a basket out of fence posts and chicken wire to place the wrapped pig in.

Wait until all wood is burned down to hot coals before you put the pig in. Then place the basket with the pig directly on top of the hot coals.

You will need to make some type of hook to lower the pig into the hole.

Lay metal bars, t-posts should work, place them cross ways across the hole. This is to support the tin.

Next lay tin long ways over the hole and overlap it a little then cover it with 4-6 inches of dirt. Make sure no smoke is coming out and the hole is completely sealed.

Let it cook 8+ hours then enjoy.

This is how we have been doing it and it seems to work pretty good.

I have a Kubota 1140. Its slow, but it will pull about anything. With good mud tires it will go almost anywhere. I have had 6 adults on it going across a mountain with some pretty steep places. It has power steering and hydraulic dump. Only problem is max speed is a little under 30 mph on black top.

I'm sure if the hog population starts exploding like it did in TX they will come around on hunting them with dogs.

Hope so.

http://www.huntsmart.com/Complete-Home-Hide-Tanning-Kit

I've used this kit and tanned a coyote and coon. They turned out pretty good. The one kit has done those two hides and I still have enough to do two or three more. It comes with everything you need but salt, time, and elbow grease.

I take some ibuprofen(for the head ache if u got one), little red pills(nasal decongestants) start with a p I forget the drug name, and some mucus releif pills like mucinex. Keep them in your system and drink lots of water. This is all available at walmart or walgreens. Good luck

It's more rewarding to raise your own... but you never know how they will actually turn out. Like grittydog said you will have a hard time finding a truly finished dog.
