HOG & DOGS / GENERAL DISCUSSION / Re: DIY meat processing

I've butchered, cut up the meat, made sausage, bacon, porkchops, hoghead cheese, cracklings etc. sinnce I was a kid,but instead of me trying to explain all the processes to yall, go to youtube & search. I'm 67 years old & really can't type worth a damn! Most of the youtube videos on curing bacon are pretty good.I recommend using Mortons tender quick to cure bacon(unless you're a yankee stay away from the sweet stuff to cure your bacon & wash & soak it alot before hanging it in the smoke house or it will be very salty). If yall have any specific questions on anything about taking a live hog & turning almost all of him into some very good to eat yall are welcome to p.m. me. HOG & DOGS / HOG DOGS / glass eyed bulldog
|

I bought a real good bulldog that I like alot, but was wondering about his bloodlines. He is almost snow white, weighs around 80 lbs.,plenty of leg, easy to handle, straight ear, fairly long nose,& has 1 glass eye.He looks like he is probly american but I'm not sure. Does anyone know of any bulldog bloodlines that produce glass eyes? I am pretty sure he is all bulldog & not part catahoula.I'm just wondering what his bloodline might be.Any info?

Me & my hunting buddy have lost 12 dogs to pseudorabies over the years. I think that is what your dog had.Was the dog was exposed to pseudo about a week prior to him going down? If you had him in hogs a week or so before he went down, that is when he contacted pseudo.

HOG & DOGS / GENERAL DISCUSSION / Re: Lets talk about Hog management.........for those that don't kill em all

I'm 67 yrs old & have been hog hunting ever since I was big enough to ride behind my daddy"s saddle. We cut & marked then & still cut & mark now. There is a big change in the hogs & the dogs. I see more russian blood in the hogs We have 11,000 acres leased for hogs & deer.It is very hard to stay on 11000 acres with the way the hogs run now.We have hunted other places & caught lots of russians and brought them back & released them on our lease. This made for more hogs but not the best hogs to bay & rally. Now we bay every color in the rainbow. We still have a pretty good stock of hogs though. We brought in 13 bars last winter for sausage & I weighted every one of them as we butchered them. The 13 weighed 3720 lbs.I know that russian blood runs worse than the old stock, but they are survivers. The are more nocturnal whitch makes it harder for the deer hunters to kill them.If you are trying to take care of your hog herd, the worst thing you can do is put rough dogs in them. This makes the hogs run worse & them "alligaters" will cripple or kill lots of your stock. When I was young , my daddy only hunted 1 dog at a time,& if it caught before he was told to, he didn't make the trip back home.If you want to keep hogs in the woods, leave the sows alone, cut every boar you catch, & keep rough dogs out of your hogs!!! HOG & DOGS / HOG DOGS / Re: gyp not coming in heat.

I had a real good gyp I wanted to breed. She was 10 years old & had never come in heat. I was told to give her a tablespoon of wheat germ oil daily to bring her in. I gave the wheat germ oil for about a month & sure enough she came in. Bred her & she had 6 healthy pups. PS. not a damn one of the pups turned out worth a sh!!!t.Mom & bad were as good as they come. Bad cross I reckon.

Yea, they work on a wild hog just like a tame one.Just don't let them get out with rings or they will starve because they can't root.

HOG & DOGS / GENERAL DISCUSSION / La. hog transport bill.
|
on: May 06, 2015, 09:50:22 pm
|
|
Well we whipped them one more time. The bill that would prohibit transporting wild hogs was deferred for a year in the house committee. We can haul them for at least 1 more year any where in La. we see fit.Id like to turn a big boar loose in the La. Capital building.I have fought this bill for 3 or 4 years and I guess will have to fight it again in 2016!!!! BOLO----the old blue boar

HOG & DOGS / HOG DOGS / Re: Bad Feet

For bad feet on dogs: 3-5% iodine mixed with formaldahyde half & half.Put on dogs feet 5 days in a row(I put it in a butter dish & submerge foot in dish) . You might have to have some connections to get your hands on the formaldahyde.
