You have that dog now koyote?he's sure a good looking dog.how's he hunt?
yup i still got him. he is gettin old now. ive retired him but i got him collected and saved. got pups off of him and t-dogs yonder gyp on ground now. gonna breed him to a gyp of mine end of this month hopefully. so i will probably start conditioning him to get him back in the woods. he hunts great. starts with hunting close circle and quickly gets out further and further till he comes up with a hog or i call him back. can freecast/rig/road or put on a track. had a great nose for a cur but what really set him apart was his drive//want-to and brains. has a great handle could call him off hogs or tell him to catch most the time it was like he knew what i was thinking. extremely athletic. was a great cow dog. he got to be really gritty as he got older so i had to hunt him solo or he would catch out on anything as soon as a dog showed up. hardly got cut but when he did he was usually at the vets. i have a ton of stories from him and could go on and on. hes a great dog, but as always ive never owned a dog i never cussed at.

HOG & DOGS / GENERAL DISCUSSION / Re: Pig pen question ?

The seperate pen is used to seperate hogs when you are working a hog in the big pen. Also u can have a door with a draw string to the small pen. Hogs will learn when that door opens its safezone. So when your working dogs and want to get dogs off....open the door and close it behind thw hog...almost all baypens use this method. Makes it easy when you need diffrent sized hogs for dogs aswell.

A small pen within the big pen is priceless. I wouldnt cut that pannel i would add small pen if u have extra pannel. Just add some wood to top as suggested. Also helps for support if u gotta jump out/in.

That's a crazy amount of work and waste to cut a panel long ways unless they're 12' even still a one acre pen with panels you must be rich what's wrong with 5' no climb and t post? A small pen to pen break the hogs helps with escapees as well.

I cant stand bay busters. But sometimes u can take a bay buster and hunt him/her by themselves and they make the best dogs.
Sounds like you have alot of young dogs on the ground. Next time watch your garmin once they bayed and you can see whats happening when other dogs get there. I would hunt your more experienced dogs solo to see what each individual dog is doing. Then try to only pair up one experienced dog with a young dog. You will eventually know whats going on.
Since the hogs arent dog smart if your dogs are rough on hogs that are bayed they will cause them to run. Dog should only be rough to stop a runner and once hog is stopped they should be backed up and baying preferably not a foot away from the hogs face. When dog is baying only a foot away hes putting to much pressure and when hog charges then runs the dog has to dodge the hogs charge or get ranover then try to play catch up to shut it down. If the dog is 5 feet or more backed up and hog runs the dog can actually react quicker to shutting the hog down.

HOG & DOGS / GENERAL DISCUSSION / Re: Dirt floor kennel VS Concrete???

I love chains. But i dont have enough shade in my new house for them. So i poured a slab. Before i moved to texas i had fogs on chains and i had dogs in kennels but the kennels were on a raised wooden platform.
I will take chains over anything I like wooden platform over concrete Concrete is easy to keep clean but can be hard on dogs. Raised platform was clean. Cooler in summer and keeps bugs down. Only problem i had with wooden floor was dog nails had to be constantly trimmed.

I have some experience with alot of diffrent bird crosses. Most being crossed with elhew.
Pros...lots of go, stamina, nose, confirmation. Never have to worry about them staying at your feet. Good disposition and willingness to please. Easy to train and correct. Can be sensitive to the hand really only have to correct by voice.
Cons....when young alot of them have more fun running first turnout then hunting. Young does liable to hit a dirt road and just run it. Loss of stock bred genetics with F1 cross.
The best crosses ive see are when the bird dog has been bred down to a 1/4 or less.
Just dont bred any ol bird dog....find you a nice pointer with the traits tou want. Elhew seems to work the best.
I have some dogs that been bred back and forth together for a while and im very pleased with them.

Appalachian mountains is probably one of the toughest places. Literally will break a man and his dogs.
I have a 400 acre pine clearcut on my property that just absolutely sucked trying to get in or out of. Just full of briars wore the dogs ears off. Hogs would just sprint for that clearcut if they were within a mile of it. Had a small creek that ran through it just full of cattails and briars.
The worst place is an island in a swamp area that literally shredded a thick carhartt coat. In the summer its was horrible always left with an ear full of briars. Always On my belly trying to get to dogs. One time it took us almost an hour to go 60 yards. Fell in a gator hole out there bout gave me heart attack. Hogs would always seem to be trying to go out the way i was going in on my belly. Every hog in that river bottom would always take you to that island tryin to lose the dogs.

I like hunting alone alot.....theres just something about it being with just your dogs, But it will make an ordinary situation very unique lol. I also love hunting with people essp good friends who are good dogmen.
And I assure you florida curdog catches alot of hogs with just one dog.
