HOG & DOGS / GENERAL DISCUSSION / Dogs Pads
|
on: May 14, 2016, 11:32:51 am
|
I've been noticing lately that my dogs have been running there pads off pretty quick. I'm pretty sure its because my kennels i have now have wood for the flooring. My last kennels were concrete and I didn't seem to have this problem. Any suggestions on what I can put in my kennels to toughen up there feet? I know I can put stuff on there pads that help but I don't want to have to do that all the time.

I bought a pup from Dave and she was by far the best pup I ever started. She had a lot of go in her and hunted deep. Her first hunt she was hunting anywhere from 700 yrds to 1000 yrds. She hunted like that every time which was her downfall because of my bad handling. Instead of doing like I normally do which is haul her around and send her to the bays, I hunted her on the ground in country which didn't have hardly any hogs. So since there wasn't any hogs she was real trashy and I keep burning her up with the shock collar. I broke her real quick but in turn she quit hunting. So now she wont get out of eye distance from me. I bred her back to one of his studs and the pups I keep I culled them all. He said the pups he kept were some good ones. I guess that's the way it goes sometimes.

I know this old but I thought I would chime in since I've always raised my dogs from pups. I take them to controlled environment and tie a pig up to a tree. I'll get the young dogs and walk them right to the hog and see what happens. If they don't do anything i'll mess with pig to try and gets the pups fired up. If they still don't do anything (which they should) I'll get an older dog to start baying and usually the younger ones fall in. I do it this way to see which ones have the want to right off the bat because the dogs either have it or they don't. After a couple times of this I take them to the woods. At first I haul them and turn them to the older dogs when they strike so they are not running around trashing. I don't trash break them till I know they like hogs. Once they are going to the bays good and I like what I see I'll put them on the ground and then start the trash breaking. After that you just need to try and feed him hogs and the rest is up to them.

HOG & DOGS / HOG DOGS / Re: When Selling Hog Dogs...

I agree with a lot of points talked about on here about breeding and culling. I was kind of like Rueben except I though good dogs were easy to get till I lost the dogs I had and had to start over and tried some different dogs and realized real quick what I had. Half of my dogs now are related and are related to what I had and im trying to tighten up the line again. I don't breed a lot like Judge said but I usually have a good idea of what im getting and its worked for the most part. We need to remember that the dogs we breed started off as scattered bred and unknown dogs at one point. The line has to start somewhere.

HOG & DOGS / HOG DOGS / Re: Catch Dog Question
|

My dogs will catch as soon as the catch dog hits. Sometimes they catch before he gets there depending on how big it is. If the hog tries to run they will usually try and catch it so the dog will have help. This hole catching on the nose is new to me so I didn't want to dive into getting one without hearing the good and bad. It seems like straight ear dogs are getting harder to find. I don't want a cut up dog all the time cause he's on the nose.

HOG & DOGS / HOG DOGS / Catch Dog Question

Looking for opinions on catch dogs. I've always had straight ear dogs and the one's I've found for sale they say will catch the ear or nose. Since I've never had one that would catch the nose I wanted to hear from some of y'all that have had these dogs. I don't sell the hogs so I'm not worried about damage to the nose I'm more concerned with the dog getting cut.

I'm with YBM. It's not that big of a deal to me to give a few extra shots and an extra bag of dog food to feed a few more pups. I enjoy having pups and raising them and hunting them. I've never sold a dog or a pup. I usally keep a few and the rest will go back to the guys that gave me the line and a few select other people. I don't consider the cost because if i did i wouldn't have dogs! LOL

Some of the best dogs i have been around didnt want to be handled or petted or anything else, they just needed a ride to the woods and turned out. I've had 2 that i couldnt touch but my boys could so they would load em in the trailer for me. If there gonna eat here they're gonna work. I would just turn em out and hunt em and if they didnt load up when it was time to go they were gonna take a long nap. Well one came home and one didnt. That dog turned into a really good dog. Hunted him till he died. Take em to the woods and see what he'll do.

HOG & DOGS / GENERAL DISCUSSION / Question about A.I.
|
on: November 06, 2012, 10:58:02 am

Im not familiar with this so i figured i ask for advise from the people who have experience with it. I know the coon hunters have been doing it for years but havent heard or seen topics about it on here about doing it with curs. What are the steps involved as far as having the semen shipped and storage and everything else that needs to be done. Thanks for your input.

I always told my hands that '' If i have to do it then i dont need you'' I dont know if that would qualify as a motivational saying but it always seemed to work! Lol
Here's another one '' If you cant tie a knot tie a lot''

Yea we all know a lot of it is staged but thats probably 99% of reality shows. I thinks its awesome they get to make a living doing what they enjoy. I dont think they are hurting us as bad as most people on the www now days cause i cant recall them letting the dogs chew down the hogs and they pretty much take everything out alive. Most people probably dont even wanna see them hunting they just wanna see Lea and Krystal!!
