HOG & DOGS / HOG DOGS / Re: Cooking for Dogs

“Cooking” is what renders all kibble less than ideal as the only source of food for a dog that you are asking to be an athlete. The omega 3s can’t handle the heat the way the 6s can, so no matter what they start with it aint the same after it is processed into kibble.
I feed raw. I know most can’t feed a balanced raw diet to a handful of dogs, so when you stick that pig, or gut that deer, keep the stomach and blend it with the kibble and that will help immensely. Cut the stomach open on a pig and empty it. Feed them pieces of it. A deer, mix the contents of the stomach and the tripe itself with the kibble. Only reason I say that last part is because a lot of times who knows what bait those hogs are eating, but a rinsed pig stomach is fine in my experience.

4.5 months old. Female. No problems just don’t need two. I am keeping her littermate sister. Started heel sit stay on a leash at 12 weeks old. My teenage daughters and thier friends hold them like babies regardless of my protests. Been in the woods a couple hours at a time about 12-15 times now. Puts her feet on the tailgate when I tell her to load. Good looking pup. I just don’t need two. Boosters, Trifecta (flea pill), and rabies vaccination. Paper with tag in my hunting bag. I posted a male pup on here a few months ago, was reluctant to give him up but have decided to take a break for awhile. I lost my hound about a month ago. Pretty sure she died. This dog is almost 2, no idea what he is, he hunts, kills whatever he can catch. Not broke. Ok with cows etc. Bout all I can guarantee is he will stay busy, is cut so not so bad about running off anymore, and will bay a hog or anything else you let him. I like him a lot. I think he would make a great hog dog with somebody's pack after a couple months. Until last month he was in the woods 3-4 nights/days a week. If he was trash I'd cull him, not pawn him off on you. He's free if you would like to try him. Solid black about 50lbs. Tom Cantwell 830-220-1869 tomwc33@gmail.com

I start all mine with basic obedience training. Each dog is an individual. That makes things waaay different. Yours is too old for that most likely. After what you just described, if it were me I would set him up now and burn him good. Absolutely put a stop to it. A lot of them default to coming back to you, which can create a habit, an annoying habit, but it also makes them tell on other dogs too.

Depends on the type of dog and how old. Be honest about what you have. I'm talkin to myself too. He may not need shocking at all. How is he reacting to them now? Is he chasing them 4-500 yards and quitting or is he running them out of hearing? Is he an early or late starter? Bad to the bone throwdown game dog or is he a help dog almost finished on the dog trade? Being serious. It all matters. My Tritronics went out about two years ago. I probably wont get another shocker.

HOG & DOGS / GENERAL DISCUSSION / Re: Probiotics and the Raw Diet

You know, it was months of well its a chicken allergy. Or a beef allergy. Dogs aint allergic to meat lol! No wonder those "alternative protiens" like duck and bison and boar do so well. Its the lack of grain fed fat Tom you goofball! Seems like a simple topic now, but for a long time I was skeptical. If dog food didnt work, why the Vet got it on the shelf, and why there is 402 brands of it?
To be fair, if I had straight coyote hounds, or ran greys, or even two or three hour hog hunts 3 or more times a week I would supplement with a kibble. I have seen it too many times through all this, go back to adding a little grain free kibble and they all of a sudden perk up. Real noticable. A pure pet? No way. Strictly raw with like literally 4 or 5 pieces of kibble as a treat or reward. The problem I have seen is more is not better. The ear problems and stuff starts back up. Anyway heavy on the word supplement with the kibble for me, if at all.
I really wrote this post with the intention of making folks aware that them deer and hog guts will go a long way no matter how you choose to feed em, especially the stomach.

HOG & DOGS / GENERAL DISCUSSION / Probiotics and the Raw Diet
|

My 5 year old hound has been blessed with terrible allergies. She is an "old fashioned" B&T. Line bred to say the least. I have spent countless hours researching how to help her. Have spent plenty of money at the Vet over the years. With all the back and forth over the best dog food, I'm inclined to say none of them are worth feeding, regardless of the ingredients. I've tried them all. All of the better ones anyway. After the research I've done, I'm convinced the root of the problem with kibbles is the destruction of the probiotics during the cooking/forming process. Nevermind the destruction of vitamin supplement touted on the bag. The second part of the problem with kibble is the way a dogs gut registers the contents. After cooking/forming, those now basically table scrap type of food bits are registered as carbohydrates. Carbs and starches, like rice grains and potatoes, promote the negative bacteria in a dogs GI tract that cause skin issues, eye and ear nasty, and overall reduction of energy. Research leaky gut. Nevermind glycemic index for practical purposes here. Sweet potatoes dont work either. I know about cold formed. I've tried that too. I have little doubt most of you will say, "Shes a cull" and "My dogs do just fine on kibble". On the surface, both of those opinions are correct in my view. However, most dogs are not so tightly bred that mother nature starts penalizing the offspring, and most hog dog types I know of have some degree of hybrid vigor. I know, Iditarod dogs eat kibble. They also eat a majority of raw or blanched meat with that kibble. I think a bit of kibble helps with going to the bathroom and in extreme examples like sled dogs the addition of carb type foods aid in recovery and energy production. What I have found works for my dog is feeding the stomach and all its contents of game animals. All of the grass and other contents are saturated in probiotics. Why raw diet supporters say feed green tripe. I have not found any issue with freezing to kill parasites either. Organs are full of vitamins, meaty bones provide protien and calcium. Research calcium absorption in dogs, its effects on the central nervous system, and absorption rates in raw bones vs calcium supplements. The most aggravating thing about this whole feed issue is store bought stuff like chicken backs etc are not the best either. Research omega 6 to 3 fatty acid ratios. A game animal or one right outta the pasture has an ideal ratio. Domestic feed lot animals produce omega 6 in excess but very little omega 3. Do enough research on this topic alone and you will be giving your kids a fish oil pill everytime they eat a little bacon and eggs. Research how a dog processes and uses omega 6 fats vs omega 3 fats. Guess which one survives the kibble process and which one doesnt. Thats right, omega 3s are all but wiped out. To make a long story short, my dog is a magnificent specimen when she is eating stomach and its contents, organs and raw meaty bones of game animals. I dont feed the intestines. Once I run out of that and begin feeding store bought stuff (I have 4 kids, plenty of meaty bone scraps to pull from) she starts to decline. I have asked a couple different vets about swine brucellosis, they advised me not to worry about that too much. Just freeze the stuff for a couple weeks and keep it in rotation that way. I hope this helps some of you, I know I used to shoot a hog and drag him off too. I dont do that anymore.

HOG & DOGS / GENERAL DISCUSSION / Re: How many of you run off game?

I think maybe what I shouldve asked is how many of you turn out with the intention of running a hog but if no hog encourage a jumped bobcat. Or a fox. Or clean coons out of feeders. Or run bear with the same dogs if its legal where you hunt. Seems like the normal thing to do where there are short, specific seasons like most other states. I remember fishing with live bait as a kid before I got involved in the bass tourny scene. Tournament fishing all but ruined fishing for me. I sure hate that. I have often wanted to stop fooling with hounds and get me a couple game Jacks or Jagds, but I'm afraid of destroying the ecosystem I would be hunting them in. I'd hiss them little daddy didn't marry mommys on everything from wood rats to bigfoot. Hounds and curs seem to be a lot like the bass fishing scene. It doesnt really count if youre using a bucket of minnows.

HOG & DOGS / GENERAL DISCUSSION / Re: Somerville WMA

Had a visit with a Lee County man Saturday nite in the WMA. My dogs ran a cat out of hearing so I ventured back to the truck for some refreshment figuring it may be awhile. He drove past me, turned around and pulled in behind me with the Q-Beams on. He did some serious questioning about what I was doing, how I knew my dogs were after a cat, did I mean house cat or bobcat, why I had no problem going into the woods by myself after dark, etc. Anyhow after hearing my dogs coming back and obviously finally believing my story, he asked me how often I go out to the WMAs there and if I ever see anybody. I said "About twice a week and no, people are way more afraid of the woods at nite than they like to admit". In a very concerned and straightforward tone he informed me that drugs were a big problem around there and to please be very careful. He said there were a lot of people watching the WMAs because of meth and he couldn't believe I havent seen anybody, law folks or junkies. He asked that I please call them or the Wardens if I ever saw anybody out there that looked like they didn't belong because they needed the help. I reminded him that I been doing this since I was a boy, and that if someone is in the woods at nite, and they aint obviously dog hunters or otherwise, something is wrong. Like I said, people are scared of the dark. If a guy can't coon or hog hunt or whatever because of meth heads, something is bad wrong. Now I might be getting a little scared of the dark.
